The Internet Democracy Initiative is devoted to understanding the role that the internet does and could play in supporting democracy. We are looking for a Data Engineer and/or Data Scientist who can work with complex data, focused, but not exclusively, on working with data from the National Internet Observatory (nationalinternetobservatory.org), a large, NSF-funded project. The Data Engineer/Scientist provides expert support and guidance for data-intensive research activities within a comprehensive digital scholarship program that supports a range of computational social science projects across campus.

Responsibilities:

We are looking for a Data Engineer and/or Data Scientist who can work with complex data, focused, but not exclusively, on working with data from the National Internet Observatory (nationalinternetobservatory.org), a large, NSF-funded project. The Data Engineer/Scientist provides expert support and guidance for data-intensive research activities within a comprehensive digital scholarship program that supports a range of computational social science projects across campus.

Qualifications:

We will consider a range of experience levels for these positions, but demonstrated ability and competence is a must.

Knowledge and skills required for this position are typically acquired through the completion of a Bachelor's degree; Master's or PhD degree in statistics, data or information science, information design, computer science, various quantitative social sciences, or other relevant discipline preferred.

Previous experience working in a data-intensive environment, preferably in a research setting. Knowledge of some (not all) of the following is required: Python (numpy, scipy, pandas, sklearn, etc.) and/or R; developing ETL workflows/data engineering pipelines; MongoDB and Spark; relevant statistical inferential methods.

Experience working with databases, data management systems, and APIs.

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to formulate options, develop and recommend solutions as part of a participatory set of work practices.

Excellent oral and written skills and ability to prepare project documentation.

Experience with developing and leading workshops and individual consultations desirable.

Ability to work with HTML data, web scraping, and parsing scraped data a plus.
