GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the A.S. Basic Needs Coordinator, the A.S. Food Pantry Lead is responsible for the logistics and overall successful daily operations of the A.S. Food Pantry. This position also provides administrative support for the A.S. Food Pantry.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Functions
- Provides logistical support for the day-to-day operations of the A.S. Food Pantry. Prepares supplies, including check-in tablet, marketing materials, and campus resource flyers, for daily use and distribution
- Directly assists food pantry visitors with check-in process, item selection, and customer service needs
- Responsible for maintaining food and supplies inventory records and communicating inventory needs to A.S. Basic Needs Supervisor
- Responsible for ensuring food safety procedures are adhered to by all pantry staff and volunteers, including monitoring refrigerator temperatures, sorting all perishable and nonperishable food by quality and food safety standards, and cleaning and sanitizing food storage areas and equipment regularly
- Monitors volunteer sign-ups and attendance for all food pantry volunteers Provides informational training to potential volunteers in small group orientations regarding general food pantry operations, volunteer expectations, volunteer scheduling, and food safety
- Provides on-site training to volunteers regarding food pantry operational processes, including checking in visitors, stocking and shelving food, and cleaning and sanitizing facilities and supplies
- Assists with shopping at the San Diego Food Bank
- Responsible for receiving weekly deliveries from the San Diego Food Bank, and recording and organizing contents of deliveries
- Responsible for retrieving, transporting, weighing, sorting, and shelving food donations from the Aztec Markets
- Ensures that all food unable to be distributed at the A.S. Food Pantry is correctly composted and identifies food packaging that is able to be recycled
- Participates in weekly meetings as a student liaison between A.S. Food Pantry and Student Support Commission
- Provides administrative support to assist with food inventory, distribution, volunteer
scheduling, and volunteer attendance records.
- Will take on special projects as assigned
Customer Service and Collaboration
- Establishes and maintains working relationships with all A.S. staff and the SDSU community
- Works closely with the student volunteers and A.S. staff members
- Works with the Student Support Commission and Aztecs Rock Hunger student leadership team as a liaison for the A.S. Food Pantry
- Ensures volunteers are contacted, trained and scheduled
Safety
- Ensures all operations are conducted with the safety of A.S. Food Pantry staff and visitors as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
- Adheres to Associated Students' Code of Safe Practices
- Ensures safety protocols for the food pantry are followed at all times.
- Reports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence
- Ensures completion of proper documentation for each accident (employee and/or non-employee) and forwards to supervisor
- Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediately
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum & Preferred Requirements
Education:
- Students must be enrolled in at least half time units at SDSU (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate).
- International students must have full-time enrollment at SDSU (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate).
- Global Campus units do not meet the SDSU unit requirements.
- Must be in good academic standing
- Must be eligible to work in the United States
Experience:
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Customer service experience is preferred
Trainings to be completed within 30 days of hire:
- Anti-Harassment training (must be completed within 30 days of hire)
- Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)
- Gender Awareness Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)
- Safety Training Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)
- Food Handler's Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)
- Jacob and Cushman San Diego Food Bank Shopper Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
- Must professionally represent the Aztec Student Union, Associated Students, and San Diego State University at all times
- Must be courteous and pleasant at all times
- Must be able to exercise tact and exhibit sound professional judgment
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail are required. Must be able to follow oral and written directions and follow projects through to completion
- Ability to work well in a diverse, frequently changing population of students. Knowledge of Associated Students, San Diego State University, and basic needs resources available to students on and near campus
- Knowledge of food safety and food sustainability practices
- Must be able to work both independently with minimal supervision and work well as part of a team
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Excellent social skills; ability to relate and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, colleagues and guests
- Must have strong English language skills and the ability to read, write and verbally communicate at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
- Ability to operate a computer, proficiency with Google and Microsoft suite, and ability to learn and utilize new software programs
- Well organized, ability to effectively multi-task, ability to prioritize work, problem solve, make decisions and meet scheduled deadlines under pressure in a fast-paced work environment
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a part-time (8-12 hours/week during the academic year, 5-10 hours/week during the summer) position with expected hours to be worked Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 7:00pm

RELATIONSHIPS
Inside the Organization:
- Reports to the A.S. Basic Needs Coordinator
- Receives directions from the Associate Director of A.S. Programs and Aztec Student Union Director
- Interacts with other full-time staff within the Aztec Student Union, including the Safety Manager, Assistant Director of Operations, Operations Manager, and Operations Supervisors
- Additional interactions may include part-time staff within the Aztec Student Union
Outside the Organization

EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: Range II, Step I - Starting Rate: $19.75 per hour
