Irrigation Technicians

Job Summary

Supports and advances the operation, maintenance, and optimization of campus irrigation systems, with responsibilities that scale from entry-level assistance to technical leadership and system oversight. Duties include operating, programming, and maintaining the central irrigation control system; troubleshooting and repairing components such as filters, pumps, and piping; and performing preventative maintenance and inspections to ensure system reliability. Positions at higher levels take on increasing responsibility for complex diagnostics, system programming, irrigation scheduling, and sustainable water management. Advanced roles provide technical expertise in irrigation design, mapping, and construction review; lead projects and staff; and collaborate with Facilities Management, landscape teams, and external partners to support capital improvements and campus development. All levels contribute to maintaining a safe, efficient, and sustainable campus environment while adhering to University and industry standards and best practices. A valid driver's license may be required.

This position may be filled at Level I, II, III, or IV depending on candidate qualifications and department needs. Final level placement will be based on experience, skills, and internal equity considerations.

The department may choose to hire at any of the below job levels and associated pay rates based on their business need and budget.

Responsibilities
Irrigation Technician I: Performs entry-level irrigation work under close supervision. Assists with basic troubleshooting and repair of irrigation components such as filters, pumps, and piping. Learns to test water chemistry and adjust chemical feeds while supporting sanitary conditions. Conducts routine inspections and assists with operation of the central irrigation control system.

Irrigation Technician II: Independently performs maintenance and repair of irrigation systems. Operates and programs the central irrigation control system. Troubleshoots system components, conducts preventative maintenance and inspections, and tests and adjusts water chemistry. Coordinates with irrigation crews and landscape maintenance to support effective irrigation scheduling.

Irrigation Technician III: Advanced irrigation system operations, including programming, troubleshooting complex issues, and performing major repairs. Develops irrigation schedules to support sustainable water use. Reviews construction documents and provides input on irrigation design and system mapping. Collaborates with Facilities Management and project stakeholders on irrigation strategies.

Irrigation Technician IV: Serves as the technical expert for campus irrigation systems. Oversees system programming, optimization, and long-term performance. Leads irrigation projects and staff, supports capital planning, and provides expert guidance on irrigation design and mapping. Reviews construction documents, conducts site assessments, and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment with university standards and sustainability goals.

This position may be filled at Level I, II, III, or IV depending on candidate qualifications and department needs. Final level placement will be based on experience, skills, and internal equity considerations.

Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:
Irrigation Technicians, I: Requires little to no related experience.
Irrigation Technicians, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.
Irrigation Technicians, III: Requires 3+ years of related experience.
Irrigation Technicians, IV: Requires 5+ years of related experience.
