Associate Artistic and Outreach Director

Job Summary

Pioneer Theatre Company (PTC) is Utah's premier professional theatre company, operating under a LORT B agreement with the Actor's Equity Association and contracting with the industry's other creative unions. In residence at the University of Utah since its origin in 1962, PTC produces a season of six plays and musicals from September through May in the 932-seat Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre and the 380-seat Meldrum Theatre.

The Associate Artistic Director/Outreach and Education Director is a full-time, benefited position who will work closely with the Artistic Director to support and develop mainstage programming and new play development. The position will oversee and expand current educational programs and develop new outreach and engagement initiatives to create relationships and partnerships that generate excitement and awareness about Pioneer Theatre Company (PTC) in the wider Salt Lake City and Utah community.

Responsibilities
Production Related Responsibilities
  1. Assist the Artistic Director in script reading and analysis of plays and musicals being considered and in the creation of show descriptions and content advisories.
  2. Facilitate PTC's Internship Program including advising and supervising U of U Department of Theatre, Musical Theatre, and Stage Management Interns and coordinating their schedules with PTC department heads.
  3. Work with Artistic Director and Casting Directors preparing, coordinating, and attending auditions locally and potentially in other major cities.
  4. Attend production meetings, rehearsals, and tech/dress rehearsals as necessary for each show.
  5. Host and moderate post-show discussions and talkbacks.
  6. Participate in audio description script writing training and provide live audio description for performances, as scheduled.


Outreach and Community Engagement

Supervise and implement arts education programming in the community, including workshops and attendance at performances at PTC, for groups such as the Utah Boys and Girls Clubs and the Girls Scouts of Utah.
  1. Work with Artistic Director, Marketing and Development departments to produce and host subscriber events, symposia, affinity nights, and other supplemental engagement programming.
  2. Work with the Managing Director on community, institutional, and other partnerships, especially those connected with audience development and opportunities to generate earned or contributed income.
  3. Establish new community partnerships and cultivate lasting relationships with them on both a play-specific and company-at-large basis.
  4. Collaborate with the artistic department in fostering bridge-building strategies to reach new residents of the region and underserved communities in the Greater Salt Lake area.
  5. Routinely participate in activities and attend events and other live performances throughout the state.
  6. Act as brand ambassador at various community events and tabling opportunities
  7. Host and lead backstage and theatre building tours.
  8. Create and design educational study guides for each production.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field plus two years of related experience or equivalency. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Preferences
A successful candidate for this position has the following experience and competencies:

EXPERIENCE

Experience as a theatre director, dramaturg, or other related components of theater and/or performance. Experience as a close collaborator within organizations, universities, and/or community-based organizations. A proven track record of working within a theater, university, and community. Experience communicating and interacting with students of all ages.

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES
