Job Summary

The Department of Linguistics at CU Boulder invites applications for The Temporary ASL/English Interpreter position! This role provides ASL-English interpretation for faculty and staff across the range of academic and program-related settings, including meetings, office hours, and events, while coordinating closely with the ADA Compliance Office to support scheduling and logistics. In addition, this position offers administrative support by serving as a liaison between the ASL program and the Department of Linguistics, Division of Social Sciences, and College of Arts and Sciences. Contributes to broader efforts to integrate ASL within the Linguistics program. Who We Are

The Department of Linguistics is a major center of interdisciplinary research in cognitive-functional linguistics, computational linguistics, language documentation, psycholinguistics and experimental linguistics, and sociocultural linguistics. It offers a range of research programs targeting properties of spoken language.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Interpretation

Providing ASL/English interpretation for ASL faculty (e.g., office hours, meetings, activities, and program-related events)
Assists with interpreter scheduling and logistics with the ADA Compliance Office
Remain available for interpretation assignments as determined by departmental needs.

Administrative support

Establish and maintain a comprehensive understanding of systems and roles within the College of Arts and Sciences to anticipate and address gaps in communication as related to the ASL program.
Respond to community inquiries about the ASL program and its offerings.
Other duties to assist in the integration of ASL into LING

What You Should Know

This is a part-time, temporary role working 20 hours a week during standard business hours; Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. We anticipate this assignment lasting the entire academic year starting mid August through the end of Spring 2027.

What We Can Offer

The hourly rate for this part-time position is $30-$45.

Benefits

Temporary positions at the University of Colorado are not benefits-eligible, however, all positions are eligible for paid sick leave.

What We Require

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
National Interpreter Certification (NIC), BEI Advanced/Master, RID-recognized certification, or equivalent nationally recognized certification
Minimum 3 years of professional ASL/English interpreting experience
Previous experience interpreting in professional, academic, or higher education settings
Knowledge of the RID Code of Professional Conduct and ethical interpreting standards
Ability to maintain confidentiality

What You Will Need

Knowledge

Advanced ASL/English interpreting skills in academic, professional, and community settings
Solid understanding of Deaf culture, Deaf community norms, and linguistic/cultural mediation practices
Ability to apply the RID Code of Professional Conduct and maintain confidentiality
Strong decision-making skills regarding interpreter ethics, boundaries, and role clarity knowledge
Knowledge of higher education environments and classroom/meeting discourse
Knowledge of accessibility laws and standard processes (ADA, Section 504, effective communication standards)
Knowledge of Deaf-centered communication approaches and culturally responsive access practices
Understanding of interpreter teaming, preparation, scheduling, and coordination practices

Skills

Excellent expressive and receptive ASL and English communication skills
Ability to interpret accurately in live, fast-paced academic and professional discussions
Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills when working with faculty, students, staff, and community partners
Ability to balance multiple requests, schedules, and changing priorities
Strong organizational and documentation skills related to interpreting coordination

Abilities

Ability to work independently and use professional judgment
Ability to maintain neutrality while supporting communication access
Ability to adapt interpreting strategies to varied communication needs and settings
Ability to support recurring ASL program meetings, events, faculty collaboration, and student-related activities
Ability to maintain the physical and cognitive stamina required for interpreting work
