Purpose:

The Department of Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering at Santa Clara University (SCU), a Jesuit, Catholic university, seeks applications for a full-time position at the rank of Lecturer beginning in Fall 2026. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching various lectures and labs in civil engineering, including but not limited to surveying, solid mechanics, soil mechanics, construction materials, and other relevant courses as needed. The position also involves taking part in managing teaching and research laboratories. Teaching responsibilities typically include nine quarter-long course equivalents over three academic quarters, scholarly or professional activities that support intellectual growth as an engineer, and service to the Department, College, and University. The teaching load may be partially offset by the candidate's contributions to laboratory management. Lecturers are appointed for a term of one year. Reappointment to subsequent terms is possible depending on evidence of superior performance in teaching, persistent programmatic need, and availability of funds.

Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in civil engineering
  • Prior experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching university-level civil engineering courses and managing laboratories
  • The potential to effectively advise and mentor undergraduate civil engineering majors
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to perform meaningful service activities in the Department, College, University, and Profession
  • Ability to engage in professional activities that are appropriate to civil or mechanical engineering and that contribute to their primary responsibility for teaching
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students
