Job Summary

Counseling And Psychiatric Services (CAPS) at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Registered Nurse II - Outpatient Psychiatry! The role provides clinical and administrative support to the psychiatry services at CAPS, and direct clinical services with CAPS patients in support of their psychiatric care. In addition, the position collaborates with the CAPS therapy and administrative teams to support CAPS clients.
The role's primary clinical duties include:
  1. monitoring, triaging, and addressing medication refill requests in collaboration with psychiatry providers;
  2. facilitating coordination of care among current and previous providers in the community;
  3. assisting in administrative case management, including verification of insurance and benefits;
  4. collaborating with CAPS colleagues in clinical case management to high-risk or other psychiatry patients;
  5. assisting psychiatry providers by triaging and addressing patient questions and concerns pertaining to psychiatric and medical symptoms, and medication side effects;
  6. providing health education to patients regarding mental health, general health, and medications, as per patient needs and/or treatment plan directives of psychiatry providers;
  7. supporting mental health stabilization through health coaching and delivery of evidence based support services, as per treatment plan directives of psychiatry providers;
  8. obtaining vital signs as per CAPS policy and CAPS provider requests;
  9. managing and maintaining sample medication inventory, including appropriate record-keeping and disposal.
This position will maintain accurate and timely EHR entries.
The Nurse's administrative duties include:
  1. Providing input to leadership for maintaining current RN policies for CAPS Policies & Procedures Manual;
  2. Managing and updating nursing checklist for competencies;
  3. Supporting administrative tasks of the Psychiatry team.
The position collaborates with other campus departments for the treatment of CAPS students and ensures individual experiences, identities, and systemic factors are considered in all assessment, treatment, referral, and training services provided.
CU Boulder CAPS is a training clinic, so this position may interact with and support staff in training, including Post-Master's Social Work Fellows; Psychology Interns, Psychology Practicum Students, Psychology Post-Doc Fellows, Nurse Practitioner Practicum Students, Nurse Practitioner Fellows, or Medical Students.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Support Psychiatric Providers and Psychiatry Director
  • Obtain records from outside providers for new intakes and as needed.
  • Monitor pre-intake processes to ensure necessary documentation is in place prior to evaluations.
  • Contact students who missed psychiatry appointments and facilitate follow up as appropriate.
  • Assist in monitoring and care-coordination of high-risk or unstable patients via outreach by phone and messaging.
  • Address phone calls and messages from patients regarding their psychiatric care, under the direction of psychiatry providers, and assist in other between-visit communication such as regarding laboratory results.
  • Contact insurance providers for verification of coverage and benefits.
  • Complete prior authorization requests for medication and other psychiatric services.
  • Assist Psychiatry Director in management and coordination of psychiatric provider and psychiatric trainee schedules.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Complete documentation in a timely manner and per CAPS protocols.
  • Provide in-service and cross-training to nursing staff on psychiatric nursing.
  • Participate in updating CAPS Policies and Procedures as pertaining to nursing.
  • Manage and update nursing checklist for competency, techniques and training according to standard guidelines.
  • Manage and update department's medical emergency supply kit.
  • Assist Psychiatry Director and CAPS Director in meeting planning, as needed.
Patient Care
  • Obtain appropriate vital signs and document in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Facilitate refills and bridge medication as appropriate.
  • Respond to patient messages and calls regarding medication questions, side-effects and refills.
  • Provide medication education to patients.
  • Provide scheduled health education and health coaching as per psychiatry provider treatment plans.
  • Perform side effect screening assessments as directed by prescribing providers and/or CAPS Policy Manual.


What You Should Know

This part-time position will work 24 hours in the week between Monday and Friday. Hours will be dependent on CAPS operational needs. This role has the ability to work a hybrid work schedule. In general, hours will need to be spread across the week to support daily clinic operations. This role is not expected to work weekends, evenings, or University recognized holidays.

What We Can Offer

The annual salary for this 60%, part-time position is $57,360 - $74,116.80 (equivalent to $95,600 up to $123,528 for a full-time position).Onboarding assistance is available within Student Life division guidelines.

What We Require

  • Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC); or eligible for license prior to hire with current active license in another state.
  • 2 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Valid Basic Life Support License by completion of orientation.
  • Eligible for clinical privileges as determined by the Department's Credentialing and Privileging Department.
