Position Announcement
Utah Valley University is seeking an Assistant Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy to teach graduate-level MFT courses under the direction of the department chair and the dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. This position carries a 4/4 teaching load, which may include hybrid and/or distance education courses. The role emphasizes a student-oriented approach to academics, including planning and delivering instruction with measurable course objectives, preparing instructional materials, and supervising students in oral, practical, and performance assessments. Additional responsibilities include advising students, maintaining accurate academic records, supporting recruitment and placement efforts, and collaborating with faculty and staff to maintain an effective academic program.
Faculty in this role are also expected to develop an active research agenda involving students, resulting in presentations and publications, while continuing professional growth through research, professional associations, and ongoing education. Service is an important component of the position, including participation on committees and attendance at required meetings. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to student success and program development within a structured and teaching-focused environment.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Plans, prepares, and follows an approved course of study that includes measurable objectives for each course taught. Instructs, manages, and supervises individuals and groups in classrooms and/or laboratories by demonstration, discussion, and visual aids while maintaining a student-oriented approach to education. Maintains a 4/4 teaching load and teaches two of the following: Lifespan Development, Early Development, Adult Development, Ethics, Systemic Assessment and Diagnosis, Research Methods, Couple, Group, Individual, or Family Therapy. Prepares instructional materials (mock-ups, visual aids, and instruction sheets) as necessary.
- Selects books, supplies, and equipment necessary for coursework. Establishes and maintains office hours and advises students during this time and at other times as needed. Documents and maintains accurate and current reports and records involving student accountability, attendance, performance, and follow-up.
- Creates and disseminates original, scholarly material. This often takes the form of peer-reviewed publications and presentations, and may also take the form of books, chapters, documentaries, etc.
- Serves on committees and attends faculty and other meetings as assigned. Assists counselors, department chair, staff, and faculty in maintaining an effective program.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
- Graduation from an accredited institution with a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy, or a doctorate from an accredited institution in a related discipline, AND an awarded license in MFT with a minimum of two years post-master's clinical experience, AND experience supervising MFT students or associate-level clinicians, AND experience teaching at a post-secondary education institution as indicated on the curriculum vitae.
- Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. Ability to teach two of the following: Systemic Assessment and Diagnosis, Research Methods, Ethics, Couple, Group, Individual, or Family Therapy, Early Development, Adult Development. Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with the mission of a teaching university.
- Experience as a faculty member or administrator in a marriage and family therapy program. Experience teaching or learning in an online or hybrid environment.
- AAMFT Approved Supervisor or Supervisor candidate.

- Knowledge of subject matter and course content in marriage & family therapy graduate courses and other family sciences courses.
- Knowledge of COAMFTE accreditation and AAMFT clinical practice.
- AAMFT Approved Supervisor or Supervisor candidate.
- Knowledge of the principles and methodology of teaching techniques.
- Knowledge of online and hybrid course design and instruction.
- Knowledge of Canvas or similar learning management systems.
