Job Summary


The Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Colorado at Boulder invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in pre-modern Japanese literature for the academic year 2026-27. Candidates should have their PhD conferred prior to the start of the appointment. The successful candidate will have well-focused research objectives and contribute to the department's Japanese curriculum by teaching courses on Japanese literature and culture, including Classical Japanese language, at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Who We Are


The Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations (ALC), founded in 1982, offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chinese and Japanese, five minor programs, as well as language, literature and culture courses in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi/Urdu, Japanese and Korean. ALC brings global diversity to the curriculum and the Boulder campus of CU. Our department's focus on a broad swath of the non-Western world puts us in a position to share worldviews and traditions of literature, culture, thought, and artistic expression developed by civilizations in pre-modern, modern, and contemporary South Asia, East Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East.


What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Teaching three courses per semester to undergraduate and graduate students in Japanese literature and culture.


What You Should Know

  • This is a one-year appointment for the academic year 2026-2027. The anticipated course load for this appointment will be three courses each semester for a total of six courses.
  • Candidates must have a PhD degree conferred prior to the start of appointment on August 13, 2026.


What We Can Offer

  • The starting salary for this 100% appointment is $62,500 over the 9-month academic year.
  • A moving allowance of up to $3000 will be available to the successful candidate in accordance with University policies.
