Associate Program Director for Family Medicine Residency Program
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Feb 19, 2026
Deadline: Feb 19, 2028 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time
The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor position in the non-tenure academic clinician track. The selected candidate will also serve as the Associate Program Director for Family Medicine Residency Program. Expertise is required in the specific area of Graduate Medical Education. Applicants must have an M.D. or equivalent degree. Board certification in Family Medicine is required.
The Department hosts a highly successful residency program in Family Medicine with a total of 36 enrolled residents and attracts doctors who have demonstrated a commitment to reducing health care disparities. The program has comprehensive excellence across all spheres of Family Medicine training and is particularly well-known for care of vulnerable populations and for family medicine obstetric care.
The Associate Program Director (APD) supports resident success through leadership in equity, belonging, and learner growth. The ideal candidate will have significant prior experience in graduate medical education. Key responsibilities include oversight of leading programming that increases belonging and inclusivity, and supporting residents who have faced structural barriers to a path in medicine such as designing educational sessions on bias, microaggressions, and cultural humility. This role also develops a coaching infrastructure, trains faculty coaches, and implements individualized learning plans and remediation strategies to help residents achieve competency milestones. The APD collaborates on curriculum design, faculty development, and programmatic policy review with attention to equity and bias.
Teaching responsibilities may include participation in the education of Family Medicine residents, medical students, and interdisciplinary learner teams.
Clinical responsibilities may include precepting residents and independent clinical care in the continuity office setting. Experience with comprehensive primary care of patients of all ages as well as prenatal care services is desired. While inpatient hospital medicine is not a required element of the position, candidates with a particular interest in pursuing inpatient hospital medicine on our teaching service will have opportunities to incorporate this into their clinical effort. Academic Clinicians are not required to participate in research, however opportunities to participate in clinical research may arise with faculty within the department or university.
Candidates should have a passion for teaching Family Medicine residents and students and have a strong demonstrated commitment to addressing health disparities in marginalized communities. We recognize the impact of structural oppression on the demographics of the physician workforce, and we strive to cultivate an inclusive and equitable work environment.
