Salary/Pay Range: $ 55,315 - $60,000 annually. Compensation will be commensurate upon experience and qualifications.This position is Exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime provisions.

Summary

As part of the Division of Emergency and Safety Services (DESS) at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS), the Operational Safety Coordinator supports operational, occupational, and environmental health and safety programs across campus. This role applies in-depth knowledge of safety principles, risk management, and environmental compliance to assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs that promote injury prevention, safe work practices, and operational risk reduction.

The position exercises discretion, analytical skill, and personal accountability while contributing to operational safety initiatives across academic, administrative, facilities, and operational environments. The Professional works under the guidance of Department Leadership, providing support and technical expertise on safety programs and ensuring adherence to recognized safety standards. The role also fosters a culture of safety by partnering with faculty, staff, and students to integrate safety and compliance into workplace practices and behavior.

Operational safety programs may include, but are not limited to, lockout/tagout, ladder safety, machine guarding, powered industrial equipment, fall protection, confined spaces, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, and other workplace safety programs. While UCCS is not regulated by OSHA, the University adopts OSHA standards and other recognized frameworks as best practices. The role assists in interpreting and applying these standards to campus-appropriate policy, guidance, training, and oversight.

The Professional also supports safety and preparedness training across the Division and campus partners, providing consultation, guidance, and training under Department Leadership.

Essential Functions

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Design, implement, evaluate, and maintain operational, occupational, and environmental health and safety programs under Department Leadership guidance
  • Support the establishment and maintenance of University-wide safety procedures, inspection protocols, and guidance based on recognized best practices and regulatory frameworks
  • Interpret external standards (e.g., OSHA, industry best practices) and assist in applying them to campus programs
  • Conduct operational safety inspections, audits, and code compliance activities; document findings, evaluate risks, and support Department Leadership in corrective actions
  • Provide oversight or support for key campus safety programs, including:
    • Lockout/Tagout
    • Confined Space
    • Powered Industrial Truck (forklift)
    • Fall Protection
    • Respiratory Protection and Hearing Conservation
    • Air quality monitoring and generator usage
    • Hazardous and universal waste collection, storage, and disposal
  • Assist University departments in compliance with general safety, life safety, and environmental requirements established by Federal, State, University, and local regulations
  • Identify, investigate, and evaluate safety incidents, complaints, and trends; recommend corrective and preventive actions under Department Leadership review.
  • Coordinate, develop, and deliver safety and environmental training in non-research areas for faculty, staff, and student employees; maintain training schedules, participation records, and documentation
  • Contribute to development and maintenance of guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and institutional safety materials
  • Monitor operational activities, equipment use, and work practices to identify potential hazards; advise Department Leadership on mitigation strategies
  • Support emergency preparedness efforts, including development, training, and exercises related to the University Emergency Operations Plan (EOP)
  • Assist Public Safety and other Division teams with data entry, training, emergency operations, and cross-functional initiatives as needed
  • Participate in Division-wide initiatives, strategic projects, and continuous improvement efforts supporting campus safety and resilience.

Qualifications

    • Must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in occupational safety, industrial safety, environmental health, emergency management, science, environmental studies, or a related field.

    • Must have progressive experience in operational or occupational safety, risk management, or environmental health within a complex organization.

    • Experience in interpreting and applying safety standards and best practices (e.g., OSHA) to institutional programs, guidance, or training is required.

    • Experience coordinating or supporting safety inspections, audits, training programs, or compliance initiatives is preferred.

    • Preferred certifications and credentials:
      • OSHA 10- or 30-hour
      • Certified Forklift Instructor (Powered Industrial Truck)
      • Colorado Fire & Life Safety Educator I
      • Certified Occupational Safety Specialist

    • Experience in hazardous materials/waste management, environmental monitoring, or regulatory compliance preferred.

    • Experience working in a regulatory environment (city, county, state, or federal) preferred.

    • Ability to stand, sit, squat, bend, kneel, walk for extended periods; lift up to 50 lbs; and push/pull up to 500 lbs with mechanical aid as needed.
