Job Summary
The University of Utah College of Nursing seeks a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to provide integrated psychiatric care, including both psychotherapy and psychopharmacologic treatment, within the College's Practice and Community Collaboration. This role will be based at either the Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake (UICSL), the University of Utah's RedMed Employee Health Clinic, or a combination of the two, depending on program needs and provider interest.
At UICSL, the PMHNP will serve American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities in a setting that integrates traditional Indigenous healing practices with Western medicine. At RedMed, the PMHNP will provide psychiatric care to university employees within an occupational/employee health model.
This position offers a high degree of professional autonomy within a supportive, mission-driven academic practice, with opportunities to collaborate, innovate, and mentor future psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners. Most clinics operate during standard daytime hours, Monday-Friday.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and provide longitudinal mental health care, including evidence-based psychotherapy (e.g., supportive, CBT-informed, trauma-informed, or other appropriate modalities) and psychopharmacologic management. Develop and implement integrated treatment plans that combine medication management and psychotherapy, tailored to individual patient needs and cultural context. Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychiatric medications in accordance with best practices and regulatory standards. Recognize psychiatric emergencies and initiate appropriate emergency care and triage. Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests as clinically indicated. Integrate mental health care with general health promotion, disease prevention, and wellness strategies that are culturally responsive and trauma-informed. Collaborate with interdisciplinary partners including primary care, therapists, social services, pharmacy, insurance, and community agencies. Provide individualized patient education and counseling that reflects the patient's clinical needs, cultural background, and social context. Maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation in compliance with medical record policies and regulatory standards. Participate in quality improvement and program evaluation activities. Serve as a preceptor for undergraduate and graduate nursing students.Perform other duties as assigned in support of clinic and program goals.
Minimum Qualifications
Required
Licensure to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Utah.
Preferred
Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.
Utah State prescriptive privileges.
Licensure is obtained by completing a Master's degree in Nursing or equivalency (the only equivalency to the Master's degree is current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner) and a National Certification which requires the successful completion of a nationally accredited examination.
UHPPM 1-56 requires that newly hired non-physician providers apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
