Position Announcement
Join Utah Valley University as a Painter and play a vital role in supporting a safe, attractive, and well-maintained campus for students, faculty, and staff. In this position, you'll help sustain the quality and appearance of UVU's facilities by performing a variety of maintenance, painting, and repair tasks that keep our learning and work environments functional and welcoming.
As part of UVU's skilled Facilities team, you'll apply your craftsmanship and attention to detail in areas such as painting, drywall, cabinetry, flooring, and decorative finishes. Summary of Responsibilities
- Applies paints, sealers, and solvents to exterior and interior building surfaces, including plaster, sheetrock, concrete, and wood. Performs building exterior and interior caulking, finish repair, mud and tape, and texturing tasks. Performs special refinishing tasks, including wood surface preparation, staining, and sealing.
- Maintains and prepares surfaces by patching holes, removing nails, scraping, sanding, applying putty, applying mud, taping, and other similar tasks.
- Performs finish work, including paneling, wall coverings, cabinets, and countertop repair and installation; hangs/installs shelves, whiteboards, glass boards, and other decorative finish elements.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs all types of floor coverings, including carpeting, rubber, vinyl, composite, tile, wood, laminate, urethane, and other materials.
- Operates equipment such as airless spray equipment, scaffolding, and motorized lifts. Uses mechanized high-reach equipment to renew caulking on exterior building panel seams, windows, and doors. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Assists in work in other areas of building maintenance, including upholstery and signage, and performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
Graduated with a standard high school diploma or the equivalent, plus one to three years of painting experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation with a standard high school diploma or the equivalent, plus three to five years of painting experience.
Licenses/Certifications:
Must have a valid driver's license.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge
- Knowledge of various types of painting and finishing materials and application techniques.
- Knowledge of painting specialties and building maintenance applications, as well as all applicable trades, codes, and standard trade practices.
- Knowledge of different types of floor coverings, installation, and repair techniques.
- Knowledge of the repair process for walls and surfaces.
- Knowledge of various types of painting and finishing materials and application techniques.
Skills
- Skilled in finishing work, including painting, drywall repair, carpet, floor coverings, decorative finishes, and general maintenance.
- Skilled in employing a myriad of floor and wall covering methods and techniques.
- Skilled with various hand and power tools, common to painting.
- Skilled in applying coatings and/or caulking and completing repairs to exterior and interior surfaces.
- Skilled in wood surface preparation, staining, and/or sealing techniques.
- Skilled in evaluating jobs and determining the appropriate action to take and materials to use.
- Basic computer skills.
- Customer service skills.
Abilities
- Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to painting.
- Ability to select, mix, and apply surface paint coatings that successfully match and/or restore historic interior or exterior surfaces.
- Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
- Ability to read and understand specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.
- Ability to complete projects according to specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.
