Job Summary
The Division of Pediatric Neurology in the University of Utah School of Medicine has an immediate opening for a Physician Assistant (PA). The Physician Assistant will be part of a specialized multidisciplinary team including attending physicians and residents in pediatric neurology, providing specialized neurological care including to neonates, infants, and children. This position encompasses care delivery across multiple settings including the Intermountain Primary Children's Hospital NICU, University of Utah NICU, outpatient neurology clinics, other pediatric intensive care settings, and via telehealth consultation. The ideal candidate will demonstrate potential for or already established expertise in neonatal neurological assessment, family-centered communication, and evidence-based management of conditions including hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, neonatal seizures, congenital brain malformations, and intraventricular hemorrhage.
 
The Division of Pediatric Neurology is based at the Primary Children's Hospital Outpatient Services building on the benches overlooking Salt Lake City, and at the Lehi Campus in Utah County. Job location is at the Intermountain Primary Children's Hospitals, University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, located in Salt Lake City and Lehi, UT.

Responsibilities
Essential FunctionsClinical responsibilities include:
  • Participate in neonatal neurology rounds with attending neurologists, conducting comprehensive neurological assessments of high-risk neonates and contributing to care planning.
  • Evaluate and manage infants with acute neurological conditions including neonatal seizures, encephalopathy, stroke, and congenital abnormalities under attending supervision.
  • Conduct outpatient follow-up visits for infants with identified or suspected neurological conditions, including developmental monitoring and family counseling.
  • Participate in the growing telehealth neurology service, providing remote consultation and follow-up care to infants across Intermountain Healthcare and affiliate NICUs.
  • Review and integrate diagnostic studies including EEG, neuroimaging, and laboratory testing into clinical decision-making.
  • Provide education and anticipatory guidance to families regarding neurological diagnoses, prognosis, and developmental expectations.
  • Coordinate care with neonatology, developmental therapy, social work, and other specialties involved in the infant's care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary care conferences and follow-up planning
  • Lead and contribute to quality improvement initiatives focused on NeuroNICU outcomes, care standardization, and patient/family experience.
  • This position is structured primarily as approximately 60% NICU-based care, 20-30% outpatient clinic (~95 half-days per year), and 10-20% quality improvement and program development.

  • This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.
The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

Minimum Qualifications
Required:

  • Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant from the State of Utah.
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.



Preferred:

  • Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.
