Description of Position:
DVC is seeking an adjunct General/Wellness Counselor who can provide crisis counseling and wellness support to a diverse population of community college students. The counselor will meet with students who are referred to the CARE team to connect students to basic needs and mental health community resources. The General/Wellness adjunct counselor will be providing non-clinical case management to students who are referred to the CARE Team - connecting students to basic needs resources, providing crisis counseling, and counseling students who are in distress. However, providing ongoing therapy to students is not a part of this role. This role will require that the individual use a variety of cross-cultural counseling techniques and strategies to provide academic, career, and personal counseling to students.

In addition, the individual will have the opportunity to deliver services through:

  • Teaching counseling and career-related courses
  • Conducting one-on-one academic and career counseling appointments

Duties and Responsibilities:
Adjunct Faculty duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Attending weekly CARE (behavioral management) Team meetings
  2. Providing crisis counseling in person at DVC
  3. Holding individual appointments and drop-in sessions for wellness counseling as well as academic and career counseling
  4. Participating in required training, and, as the budget allows, conferences, regional meetings
  5. Creating an environment that supports students in transferring and succeeding academically
  6. Developing Student Educational Plans
  7. Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of counseling techniques, transfer planning, and student support strategies
  8. Adhering to professional conduct and ethical standards
  9. Performing other related duties as assigned


Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:
Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and faculty.
Applicants must possess one of the following (degrees must be from an accredited institution):

  • Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage/family/child counseling
    OR
  • A valid California Community College Instructor Credential authorizing full-time counseling
    OR
  • The equivalent (If you do not have the exact listed degree but believe you qualify based on equivalent education or experience, please complete and upload the equivalency form in the application.)

Desirable Qualifications:
  1. Demonstrated commitment to student learning and success in a diverse, open-access community college environment
  2. Ability to provide crisis counseling to students who come to the Counseling Center in distress
  3. Knowledge of basic needs and mental health resources available at DVC and in the surrounding community
  4. Sensitivity and ability to effectively counsel and teach traditionally underrepresented students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds
  5. Experience developing student education plans in a community college setting
  6. Ability to work collaboratively
  7. Interest in teaching college success or career-related courses
