Description
Under the direction of the Chief Development Officer, the Major Gifts Officer leads all activities necessary for the successful implementation and growth of a select portfolio of supporters, soliciting and securing major and planned gifts. Work requires the exercise of independent judgment and analysis in decision-making in accordance with established policies and procedures. Assignments are completed independently and are reviewed through conferences with department and station leadership.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
- Major Gift Leadership: Leads solicitation of major and planned gifts. Oversees the development of new strategies and initiatives that contribute to the growth of the major gifts program, including special and restricted gifts projects. Manages the qualification process of new prospects and cultivates select midlevel donors to build a pipeline for major gifts. Maintains paper and electronic files for major and planned giving programs.
- Communications Oversight: Drafts written materials and coordinates mailings including but not limited to appeals, renewals, acknowledgement letters, invitations, newsletter communications, proposals and reports. Executes major donor, planned giving and memorial gift acknowledgement process. Leads the creation of on-air messaging designed to thank and cultivate donors in the Leadership Circle and Legacy Society.
- Stakeholder Relationship Management: Provides timely assistance and customer service to Leadership Circle and Legacy Society donors via phone and email. Meets regularly with Leadership Circle donors and schedules station tours for donors at this level, as appropriate. Plans and executes Leadership Circle and Legacy Society recognition events. Leads the management of strategic partnerships and tracks special projects for reports to key stakeholders.
- Collaborative Teamwork: Establishes, maintains, and enhances positive work relationships with staff, faculty, and administrators.
- Ethics and Confidentiality: Practices honesty by demonstrating a consistent and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles, values, truthfulness and accuracy in all actions. Addresses all student and employee behavior in a confidential and respectful manner.
- Continuous Learning & Professional Development: Maintains current knowledge of best practices and standards within Public Television. Actively organizes and/or participates in applicable workgroups, trainings, workshops, seminars, committees and professional associations or conferences to promote continuous learning.
- Other duties: Performs other related duties within the scope of the position as required for the efficient operation of the division and to support institutional objectives.
Qualifications
Compliance with all state, federal, and accreditation standards/requirement, as well as all MATC policies and procedures.
Required Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience in a non-profit, donor-centric environment, including three (3) or more years working directly with major and planned gift donors. Prior experience working with donors, volunteers, the general public and internal staff.
Preferred Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree and seven (7) years of experience in a non-profit, donor-centric environment, including three (3) or more years working directly with major and planned gift donors. Extensive prior experience working with donors, volunteers, the general public and internal staff.
Required Licensure/Certification: Must have a valid driver's license and current insurance in minimum amounts acceptable to MATC.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of essential fundraising principles, methods and techniques.
- Knowledge and appreciation of public television.
- Knowledge of donor portfolio management and donor relationship building.
- Ability to solve complex problems and exhibit high levels of critical thinking. Must be able to exercise a high level of personal discretion.
- Ability to be innovative and creative in the application of new technologies and techniques.
- Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written means, including extensive use of the phone.
- Ability to establish, collaborate and maintain effective work relationships with peers, students, teachers, staff, representatives of outside agencies, educational institutions, and the general public.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule as required including evenings and weekends as assigned and needed.
- Ability to convey an image of professionalism and dedication in work related activities.
- Ability to work with culturally diverse student and employee populations.
- Proficiency in the use of computers and software specific to position, including spreadsheets and the Internet.
- Ability to work successfully with minimal supervision and serve in a leadership role to others.
- Ability to establish workflows, manage multiple projects, and meet necessary deadlines.
Supplemental Information
Start Date
This position supports Milwaukee PBS and is available to start as soon as possible.
Hours
This position is a 1.0 FTE or 40 hours per work week. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8am - 4:30pm. Position is eligible for hybrid/flexible work.
Salary
Salary is listed to the midpoint of the salary range and is based on the 2025/2026 rates and are determined by years of experience credit and internal salary equity.
