About the Opportunity:

The College invites applications for an Assistant Dean of the College for Pre-Law Advising. Responsibilities:

At Brown University, academic advising deans play a critical role, overseeing the College's advising programs and a range of curricular and co-curricular opportunities that enable all undergraduates to develop and thrive as they connect their learning experiences to leading lives of meaning and purpose. In this context, the Assistant Dean of the College for Pre-Law Advising provides academic advising and support to undergraduate students as an academic dean, while also holding particular expertise in the area of pre-law advising.

The individual in this position counsels undergraduates and recent alumni about career pathways and applications to law school. The Assistant Dean collaborates closely with the other members of the Pre-Professional Advising team and partners with the Center for Career Exploration and the Office of Alumni Relations to support students and alumni interested in learning more about the legal profession, as well as to engage alumni in this field in programming and networking initiatives. The Assistant Dean will develop strong relationships with faculty and administrators in select departments to expand faculty support for students interested in law careers. Additionally, the Assistant Dean fills the role of academic advisor and colleague to other College divisions and programs, and serves as a member of various College and University committees, as assigned. The Assistant Dean of the College for Pre-Law Advising reports to the Senior Associate Dean of the College for Co-Curriculum.

Major Responsibilities
  • Support Students and Alumni Through Pre-Law Advising
  • Advise and Mentor Undergraduates for Success in the Context of Brown's Open Curriculum as an Academic Advising Dean Within the College
  • Develop and Deliver Pre-Law Programs and Resources


Qualifications:

Education and Experience
  • An earned master's degree; JD strongly preferred.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in the legal profession or equivalent experience as an advisor and/or academic administrator at a college or university.
  • Background in higher education academic advising, career planning, or teaching strongly preferred.


Job Competencies
  • Student-centered approach to advising and mentoring, with particular attention to supporting students from historically underrepresented and/or minoritized backgrounds.
  • Experience and/or familiarity with requirements and applications for graduate schools for the legal profession.
  • Experience in academic program administration, including planning and development, implementation, and assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and mobilize others (staff, faculty, students) to achieve shared results.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, discretion, sound judgment, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently in a deadline-driven environment and manage multiple priorities.

Additional Information:

Occasional evening and weekend work required for essential Pre-Professional Advising, College, and University events.
