Interactive Media Lab Specialist

Job Summary

The Division of Games at the University of Utah seeks a dynamic Interactive Media Lab Specialist to provide hands-on technical support for a range of teaching and research environments leveraging high-performance and/or emerging technologies. This position will support the day-to-day operations of specialized labs and equipment including the Master Game Studio, the Undergraduate Capstone Studio, the Virtual Production Lab, the Motion Capture Lab, a number of Augmented Reality and VR Labs, and the Kessler Station First-Year Game Lab. The position will be responsible for the administration of both daily and longer term cybersecurity tools and controls for the Division, managing student-facing technology checkout programs, tracking Division technology inventory, and providing support for technology fabrication for the graduate alternate controller projects course.

The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty and staff to support both instructional and research technology needs, supervise student technology assistants and lab TAs, and ensure smooth technical operation across a variety of courses and lab-based activities. This role is vital to the Division's educational and research mission and requires strong problem-solving skills, excellent communication, and a proactive attitude toward evolving technology platforms.

Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct technical support for specialized labs including game development studios, virtual production and motion capture labs, augmented and VR labs and class equipment check-out and use.
  • Support faculty and students in the integration of VR/AR/motion tech in classroom and project-based settings and the graduate alternate controller projects course
  • Coordinate classroom technology setup and in-class support as needed
  • Supervise and train a team of student TAs and technology assistants assigned to Division labs and checkout desks.
  • Oversee the Division's technology checkout and technology-related inventory management systems.
  • Work closely with faculty, researchers, and administrative staff to assess evolving technology needs and new hardware/software for possible instructional use or lab integration
  • Interface and collaborate with cross-campus IT support teams
  • Manage in-house specification and ordering for Division technology purchases.
  • Maintain documentation, support materials, and guides for student and faculty use of lab technologies
  • Manage RESPAWN campus partners program.
  • Manage security administration for Division workstations
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Four years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master's degree in a related area may be preferred.

Preferences
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in media technology, IT/computer science, games, film production, or a related field
  • Familiarity with game engines (Unreal Engine, Unity), real-time rendering, or VR/AR/XR
  • Experience with enterprise IT management including system configuration, software maintenance, and security practices
  • Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours to support instructional support needs



Preferred:
  • Experience supervising student employees or working in higher education environments
  • Experience with custom hardware and physical computing platforms (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi) relevant to alternate controller projects
  • Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following: virtual reality systems (e.g., Meta Quest, Vive, Index), motion capture hardware/software (e.g., OptiTrack, Vicon, Rokoko), or virtual production environments (e.g., within Unreal Engine)
  • Experience with academic inventory systems and equipment checkout workflows
  • Experience with enterprise-level cybersecurity administration
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new and emerging technologies


Special Instructions
Must be able to lift and move equipment (up to 50 lbs), work in lab settings with cabling, lighting, and mounted hardware.

Some evening availability is required to support in-class instructional technology during peak periods or to support Division events.

Must be responsive to time-sensitive student requests for administrative support.
