Job Summary:

The Office of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), a division of the Office of Medical Education, is seeking a entry level Academic Services Professional to fill the role of Medical Teaching Labs Assistant and Curriculum Support Entry Professional. This role involves maintaining lab operations, ensuring equipment safety, managing specimens, and supporting lab courses in collaboration with the lab manager and faculty. Additionally, the individual will assist the UME Curriculum team with course planning, scheduling, material management, and technical support for live sessions, while also supporting outreach programs and optimizing lab space use for academic and community initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory Assistant -
  • Assist with calibration, maintenance, and operation of lab equipment, including microscopes, autoclaves, and incubators.
  • Support the acquisition, use, and maintenance of pathology specimens while ensuring lab cleanliness, including disinfection, waste, and specimen disposal.
  • Open and close medical teaching labs, ensuring security and readiness for use.
  • Assist with specimen and chemical acquisition, lab setup, and coordination of processes to meet curriculum requirements.
  • Aid in the disposal of hazardous waste and ensure compliance with safety regulations (EHS, OLAR, BMBL, DEA).
  • Inform faculty, staff, and students of proper hazardous waste disposal procedures.
  • Assist with daily lab upkeep to maintain a clean and organized environment.

Curriculum Support Professional-
  • Attend curriculum planning sessions, record minutes, track action items, and manage course resources.
  • Confirm session schedules, update course planning documents, and ensure timely publication to student schedules.
  • Upload, audit, and ensure course materials are available in the Learning Management System (Canvas/Oasis) for Medical Science and Basecamp events
  • Provide on-site and remote support for curriculum sessions, including setup, troubleshooting, and assisting faculty.
  • Manage session resources, greet and assist guest faculty, capture attendance, and support Zoom sessions with technical functions
  • Develop best practices and document standard operating procedures for core responsibilities.
  • Support Office of Medical Education events and curriculum sessions while assisting with additional duties as assigned.

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings. Additional on-site days may be required as needed. Please see the campus-wide policy for additional information.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in basic science field from an accredited institution.
  • One or more years of experience working in a medical, research, or academic laboratory setting.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • First aid, CPR, and/or previous lab (bench or teaching) work.
  • Experience working in a role that interacts with human and/or animal specimens.
  • Previous knowledge of how a laboratory environment

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrates a high level of maturity and responsibility in handling sensitive medical equipment and materials, ensuring adherence to all safety protocols and maintaining a secure and organized lab environment.
  • Basic understanding of laboratory procedures and safety protocols.
  • Previous work with laboratory equipment (ie: autoclave, microscopes).
  • Able to handle delicate equipment, as well as lifting heavy equipment.
  • Awareness of laboratory rules and regulations (appropriate lab wear, working with/storage of chemicals, biowaste disposal, disinfection, etc).
  • Knowledge in anatomy, microbiology, and pathology.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to follow instructions and complete tasks independently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and professionalism with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $48,989 - $62,314.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
