Research Associate

Job Summary

The Division of Epidemiology within the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah seeks a highly motivated Research Associate to join its staff. The Research Associate will be housed within the Program for Addiction Research, Clinical Care, Knowledge and Advocacy (PARCKA) https://medicine.utah.edu/internal-medicine/epidemiology/parcka

This individual will work under the direction, guidance, and mentorship of the Director of PARCKA and PI of the Greater Intermountain Node. This individual will work to examine the outcomes of patients with addiction, their treatment, and courses of care, through pharmacoepidemiology methods. The individual will engage scholars and faculty across the University of Utah to grow this line of research. This position will work closely with the Informatics Decision Enhancement, and Analytic Sciences (IDEAS) Center of Innovation at the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Responsibilities
Qualifications

PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Data Science, or Public Health or relevant education and/or equivalent training in health service research, epidemiology, informatics, biostatistics, data science, or a related field is highly preferred. Post-graduate or post-doctoral training or relevant real-world experience in conducting health service research with experience in pharmacoepidemiology, biostatistics, epidemiology, or data science is preferred.

This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.

Key Responsibilities

Research and Analysis

  • Lead and co-lead research in health services research, epidemiology and data science
  • Performing data preparation and analysis as well as management of complex clinical data sources.
  • Current with external factors that might influence research including legal and regulatory issues, informatics standards, data science developments and peer review.
  • Interface with programmers, informaticians, epidemiologists and clinician investigators within the group and with collaborators to support research and operational projects.
  • Promote program to internal and external teams including dissemination of results through scholarly writing and conferences.
  • Performing data preparation and analysis as well as management of complex clinical data sources.
  • Use of data science to synthesize unstructured, disjointed information in to meaningful, compelling narratives that facilitate development and refinement of the health system strategy.
  • Utilize critical thinking to manage studies by planning, assisting with study design, developing statements of work and analysis plans, monitoring progress, evaluating data quality, analyzing data, and validating results.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player, to work on multiple projects under pressure and with tight timelines and maintain the attention to detail quality.
  • Write research proposals, grants, manuscripts, abstracts, and analytic reports.



Communication

  • Promote program to internal and external teams including dissemination of results through scholarly writing and conferences.
  • Use of data science to synthesize unstructured, disjointed information into meaningful, compelling narratives that facilitate development and refinement of the health system strategy.
  • Write research proposals, grants, manuscripts, abstracts, and analytic reports.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively present results at conferences and meetings, to stakeholders and peers

Collaboration

  • Interface with programmers, informaticians, epidemiologists and clinician investigators within the group and with collaborators to support research and operational projects.
  • Collaborate with study and analytics teams to test hypothesis, answer key questions, summarize data, and create reports.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player, to work on multiple projects under pressure and with tight timelines, maintain the attention to detail quality and enjoys working in a continual learning and growing atmosphere
