Distinguishing Characteristics


The primary responsibility of the Aviation Maintenance Technology Instructor is to deliver college-level instruction in both lecture and lab settings, in alignment with FAA Part 147 standards. This position is focused on promoting student success, retention, and program completion. The ideal candidate collaborates effectively with faculty, students, industry partners, and the community to support the growth and success of both students and the aviation program.

Essential Duties


  • Provide 14-16 (18 for lab) equivalent hours of instruction per semester in person, in accordance with established course outlines, departmental procedures in vocational/special education and FAA Part 147 standards.
  • Deliver engaging and effective instruction across various modalities, especially in-person.
  • Prepare and maintain course syllabi in accordance with California Education Code and Board policies
  • Develop and update curriculum, labs, and assessments that support student learning outcomes (SLOs)
  • Maintain subject-area expertise and stay current with industry standards and instructional best practices
  • Manage lab equipment, lab supplies inventory, and ensure safe, functional learning environments
  • Maintain accurate attendance rosters, grade reports and other records required by the district.
  • Hold regular office hours to support student learning and success
  • Attend department, division, and college meetings
  • Participate in college and district planning efforts and committee work
  • Represent the department in campus and community events
  • Build industry partnerships to offer students career connections (e.g., internships, guest speakers)
  • Assist students with academic planning and refer them to appropriate college services
  • Contribute to a professional and inclusive work environment that is free from bias and harassment
  • Support curriculum innovation to meet evolving student needs (e.g., Competency-Based Education, Credit for Prior Learning, Dual Enrollment, Incarcerated Student Programs)
  • Align curriculum with labor market demand and Career Education priorities
  • Observe and uphold college and district policies and procedures
  • Commitment to remaining current with the latest developments in the discipline.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively on an interagency team.
  • Maintain an effective classroom environment and workspace;
  • Represent Gavilan and provide liaison services between students, faculty, staff, workforce programs, and appropriate campus and community support systems.
  • Participate in campus shared governance and contribute to department and campus-wide student success initiatives.
  • Participate in ongoing professional learning opportunities
  • Adhere to department, division, and campus policies and procedures for faculty employees.
  • Perform other instructional related duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience


  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic-ethnic, cultural, disability, religious background and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  • Any bachelor's degree AND two (2) years of experience in Airframe and Powerplant, OR any associate's degree AND six (6) years of experience in Airframe and Powerplant.
  • Must possess and maintain FAA Airframe and Powerplant Certificate.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member's teaching assignment
  • A minimum of five years of recent experience as an active airframe and powerplant mechanic in general aviation, airline aviation maintenance, or corporate aviation.
  • Educational and/or instructional preparation in aviation maintenance, airframe, and power plant systems, and avionics.
  • A year or more of recent experience teaching aviation maintenance, airframe and power plant systems, and/or avionics at the post-secondary level.
  • Evidence of student success in teaching aviation maintenance, airframe and power plant systems, and/or avionics.
  • Evidence of participation in student success initiatives.
  • Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs of a diverse and frequently underprepared student population.
  • Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Experience with aerospace/aviation related composites and or manufacturing.
  • Experience with aviation-related avionics, electronics, and guidance control systems.
  • Current airframe and power plant licenses and related certifications.

Physical Characteristics:
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Vision sufficient to read various materials.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to perform the tasks required of the position.
  • Regularly stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time.
  • Bending at waist, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally.
  • Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs.
