Job Summary:
The Associate Director for Community Living is a twelve-month, live-in, full-time professional staff position. Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory performance evaluation, demonstration of an interest and commitment to new areas of professional development. This position is required to live-in on-campus in provided housing and serve in an on-call duty rotation.
The Associate Director is responsible for supervision, oversight and day to day management of the off-campus living, co-living student experience and upper-class residential facilities that includes but not limited to St. Anne, Fulton House, Fulton Flats, Loyola Village, Lone Mountain East and Lone Mountain North. The Associate Director will assist in the facilitation of the student off-campus housing search, civic responsibility, tenant's right education, community/neighbor relations, off-campus conflict and mediation. This includes but is not limited to implementing the co-living model, guiding and directing the planning, implementation, and assessment of all programmatic efforts for off-campus living students, upper-class residents and community/neighbor relations.
The Associate Director directly supervises the following staff: off-campus community managers, 2-3 Residence Directors, graduate students- assistant community managers, student staff and summer graduate interns. As needed additional staff could be employed within Community Living including, but not limited to: professional staff and graduate staff. The Associate Director will also have functional area oversight for departmental initiatives.
The Associate Director is part of the Community Living Leadership Team and assumes leadership responsibilities at the departmental and University levels. These include working with and chairing Community Living committees, supervising special projects, and undertaking special assignments. Leadership responsibilities may include staff training; student leadership development; academic initiatives; alcohol and other drug (AOD) education; budget management; multicultural and social justice education; orientation; and health and wellness.

Job Responsibilities
Supervision, Training and Development of Community Living Staff
Directly supervise 2-3 Residence Directors. Directly supervise 2-3 Assistant Residence Directors- Graduate Interns. Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Community Living to develop the strategic vision and direction for the Office of community living. Oversee bi-annual staff evaluation efforts and university staff appraisal processes. Conduct regular individual meetings with direct reports. Oversee development, implementation, and evaluation of all residential community staff selection and training programs; including, but not limited to: fall staff training; on-going in-services; fall RA class; spring staff training; and new and continuing RA selection. Promote professional development and recognition of staff and their efforts.
Management and Oversight of Off-Campus Living
In congruence with the mission and vision of the University and the development of USF students as whole persons, oversee the design, and implementation of the off-campus departmental outcomes Provide direction and support the achievement of departmental and divisional learning and development outcomes for students. Create, develop and implement the Co-Living Model for Off-Campus Living. This includes programming, staffing structure, assessment, and data collection. Partner with various campus offices to aid in student success and retention of off-campus students. The offices are but not limited to: Center for Academic and Student Achievement (CASA), Office Admissions, Neighborhood Relations, and Office of Student Conduct Rights and Responsibilities to develop positive affiliation and engagement of students in the off-campus environment and campus community. Create, plan, and implement a yearly housing fair program that will assist on- campus students in making the transition to living in the surrounding communities. Oversee the coordination and collection of assessment data related to departmental activities. Report out to the department and division. Serve as an advocate and representative for off-campus students to Community Living and the Division of Student Life Oversee the Off-Campus Student Advisory Board Seek out and maintain San Francisco City partnerships benefiting off-campus students. These partnerships are as follows but not limited to: Tenets Board, Rent Board, Union Board, Co-Living Board Work to establish policies and procedures as it relates to off-campus student
Student Care and Welfare
Help to support students of concern and work closely with Case Management area Hear cases of students of concerns and providing the proper follow-up reports needed
Student Conduct/On-Call/Critical Incident Response
Participate in rotating on-call responsibilities with designated Senior Housing Staff members to provide emergency/crisis response coverage to all on-campus residence life staff and student incidents. Serve in an on-call capacity to manage residence life crisis/urgent situations. Serve as a university student conduct hearing and appellate officer, when appropriate or as designated. Triages and distributes conduct cases involving violation of residential conduct policies Meet with students who are involved in behavioral incidents of a critical and complex nature, or an emergency nature. Supervise residence hall staff in identifying students with special counseling or skill development needs and coordinate referrals to appropriate resources and agencies.
Conduct
Serve as a university student conduct hearing and appellate officer, when appropriate or as designated. Adjudicate and follow-up on student conduct of both on-campus and off-campus students who violate the Student Code of Conduct Maintain effective partnership with Office for Student Conduct Rights and Responsibilities (OSCRR) by serving as a university student conduct hearing and appellate officer when appropriate or as designated. Triages and distributes conduct cases involving violation of campus and residential policies and serves as appeal officer as needed. Meet with students who are involved in behavioral incidents of a critical and complex nature, or an emergency nature.
Chair Professional Staff Training Committee for OCL
Plan, design and implement training for Professional Staff in the Fall and Spring training. Coordination on Mental Health 101 training for the community living team. Create an on-going professional development plan/ series throughout the academic year. Plan an overnight retreat in the fall for community living and a day-long refresher in the spring for all of community living. In collaboration with Program Manager, design, implement, and assess a comprehensive on-boarding, orientation and training program.
Community/Neighbor Relations
Serve as liaison to neighborhood partners; participate in monthly meetings of neighborhood associations to provide support and maintain effective partnerships amongst our neighboring communities. Support divisional and university initiatives that engage campus neighbors on the hilltop campus. Seek out and establish partnerships with off campus partners which will serve to benefit our off-campus student populations.
Transfer Summit /Graduate/Orientation Programs
Create and develop initiatives intended to support the retention and success of transfer and graduate students as it pertains to off-campus living. Maintain effective partnership with Office of Admissions, Graduate Schools, and the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement
Parent and Family Outreach
Work with campus partners to enhance and deliver information to prospective and current parents/guardians and families. Meet with (virtually/in person) parents/guardians and families in support of students navigating off campus housing.
Additional Responsibilities
Develop and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and administration at the University of San Francisco in order to utilize the full potential of the resources available on the university campus and further promote the intended outcomes of the University mission. Serve as a member of selected department and divisional committees. Project, develop, and manage operational budgets for their areas of responsibility. Pursue professional self-development, and involvement in professional organizations and other areas within the Division of Student Life. Participate in regional and international housing officers/student affairs professional organizations to develop new skills and experience and keep abreast of current research in college student personnel administration. Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Students, Director of Community Living, Associate Vice President/Dean of Students, Vice President of Student Life or designee. Assume the duties of the Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Community Living when assigned.

Supervision Received
The Associate Director reports to and is directly supervised by the Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Community Living. Verbal and email contact is expected on a regular and frequent basis. Written reports may be necessary as a follow-up to specific situations within the supervised communities. The periodic evaluation of the curricular program/co-living model and personnel will occur with the Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Community Living in consultation with other members of the Community Living Leadership Team. Decisions involving policy, procedures, and personnel within the Community Living and Off-Campus Living area at the discretion of the Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Community Living and should be communicated to, and made in consultation with the Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Community Living.
Minimum Requirements
A master's degree in higher education administration or a related field is required. Significant professional experience in student affairs (5-years minimum), with the experience preferably at a private institution, including:
- Planning, coordination, and assessment of educationally purposeful activities consistent with organizational outcomes specific experience with residential life and off campus students preferred
- Experience with conduct, counseling and crisis management
- Budget management
- Experience with providing increased supervision and or lead work direction to subordinate staff beyond students
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering engagement of students and staff on issues of diversity, academic success, and student leadership
- Understanding and knowledge of San Francisco and the San Francisco housing market
- The candidate must possess strong written and oral communication skills and have a commitment to, and understanding of, a diverse, urban institution. A demonstrated interest in, and a commitment to, the mission of a Jesuit institution is also preferred
