Job Summary:
This part-time (32-hr/week, 0.8 FTE) position serves as the Occupational Health Nurse and represents the university in this capacity by focusing on promotion and restoration of health, prevention of illness and injury, and protection from occupational hazards. Working hours are 4 8-hour shifts in-person on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with a float day Monday or Friday. This position serves multiple University of Colorado communities, including researchers, animal care providers, service personnel, and CU Medicine health care professionals. The Occupational Health Nurse provides an integrated approach to delivery of comprehensive, quality occupational health services conducting consultative and clinical services for a wide variety of health care, research, educational, and support organizations. The position provides preventive occupational health and medical surveillance services to a robust and dynamic academic biomedical research program that includes providing services to approximately 3000 researchers and staff as well as CU Medicine health care providers and staff.
Key Responsibilities:
The position works closely with and fosters strong working relationships with the research community including the principal investigators, laboratory workers, graduate students, animal care staff, researchers using rDNA, hazardous materials as well as University Police, EHS, Facilities personnel, Dental School workers and CU Medicine healthcare providers and staff.
80% - Patient Support:
- Provides support for the various Occupational Health Program components including immunizations, medical surveillance, database employee management, and occupational health program policy and procedure development.
- Assists with maintenance for the ongoing Q-fever medical surveillance program for employees that includes annual medical screening and serology, banking of serum and maintenance of records-related to this bank, education, and surveillance. Works closely with researchers and county and state health departments in reporting and follow up of cases.
- Performs health screening and assessment of infectious diseases acquired from live animals, animal tissues, excreta and allergens and other health risks associated with laboratory animal care and research activities in collaboration with and advice from medical director. Makes referrals and works with University Risk Management for follow up and treatment.
- Provides patient communication, documentation of results, and overall surveillance for the hearing conservation program.
20% - Clinic Admin Support:
- Collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and specialists to identify adverse health exposures in the work environment; design and implement appropriate intervention strategies to improve worker health and safety and establish regulatory-based medical surveillance programs.
- Responsible for clinical documentation on record keeping and communicative platforms.
- Partners with Research Safety and Industrial Hygiene, Biosafety, and University Risk Management to ensure root cause analysis, proper medical referral, and follow up with workers reporting workplace injury/exposure related to research.
- Collaborates with the Industrial Hygienist to identify associates that are potentially at risk for exposures and refer workers needing respiratory fit testing.
- Ensures Occupational Health mandated requirements are upheld.
- Stays up to date with new and improved standards for surveillance and treatment.
- Other duties as assigned.

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in biological science, nutrition, nursing, health, human services, psychology, counseling, social work, or a directly related field from an accredited institution
- A current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Colorado or ability to obtain a Colorado license within 90 days of hiring.
- Senior - Minimum 4 years of experience as an RN.
- Intermediate - Minimum 2 years of experience as an RN
- Entry Professional - Registered Nurse new graduate
A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Recognition as a Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) by the American Board of Occupational Health Nursing.
- Experience in workplace/occupational health issues.
- Experience in providing occupational health services in support of research protocols involving Center for Disease Control and National Institute of Health Animal Use Research guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
- Outstanding customer service skills.
- Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
- Knowledge of federal, state and local requirements that govern occupational health care and employee health records in an academic institution or health care setting.
- Ability to determine when an MD or supervisor needs to be alerted to situations, and which circumstances need Medical advice before proceeding with action.
- Ability to perform phlebotomy, vaccinations, and patient assessments.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in working with researchers, healthcare professionals, administrators, employees, environmental health and safety staff, and regulatory agencies.
- Excellent computer skills with such programs as Microsoft Office, including the ability to write policies and procedures in Word, create and maintain spreadsheets with formulas in Excel, create presentations in PowerPoint, and use Outlook daily for email and time management. Proficient in Epic electronic medical record documentation and use.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain collegial and cooperative relationships with members of the research and animal care staff, and Occupational Health, EHS divisions and Anschutz Health and Wellness Center staff.
- Ability to represent the department in a highly professional manner.
- Assist management with maintaining Occupational Health clinic inventory, ensuring vaccines and supplies are stocked and accounted for appropriately. Ability to research lower cost vaccination and lab services and present to supervisor.
- Assist management and staff with maintaining Occupational Health clinic invoicing.
- Strong organizational, time management and attention to detail skills.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this part-time (0.8 FTE) position has been established as:
Entry: $45,244 - $57,551
Intermediate: $49,236 - $62,628
Senior: $53,252 - $67,707
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
