About the Position:

The Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs plans and manages all academic and instructional resources that support the teaching, scholarship, and research mission of Cal State Fullerton. The office strives to serve as a central resource for the campus community, ensuring quality academic programming and fostering partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders to promote and support faculty and student success. The Office of the Provost achieves this by empowering faculty, staff, administrators, and students with the knowledge and support necessary so that we can each carry out our individual roles in fulfilling our university's mission. We seek an exceptional individual to join our First-Year Experience team as the Director, First-Year Experience (Administrator II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

The Director of First-Year Experience (FYE) at Cal State Fullerton oversees programs and initiatives to support first-year students' transition to university life and their academic and social integration. The Director manages the development and implementation of structured learning experiences for first-time freshmen who have not declared a major, including coordinating the work of an instructional team of faculty, student affairs professionals, and peer mentors in planning and teaching the curriculum of the FYE for undeclared students. Analyzes and monitors first-year student success associated with FYEs and adjusts program modifications based on data. Facilitates the development and assessment of FYEs by the college deans, department chairs, faculty, and other units to develop and implement specialized learning experiences designed to meet the curricular and co-curricular needs of first-time freshmen or incoming transfer students. Collaborates with the Office of Student Academic Support to maintain seamless academic advising and support services for undeclared students. Administrates, develops and implements policies and procedures for First Year Experiences at Cal State Fullerton and develop an FYE Advisory Board. Participates in continued development and expansion of recruitment, retention, and other activities designed to increase the academic success of first-year students. Monitors the success of the program and students. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in higher education, student affairs, or a related field. Minimum of five years of experience in higher education, preferably in student services or first-year programs. Strong understanding of student development and transition theory. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people. Experience with program planning and outcomes assessment.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral degree from accredited college or university. Experience working with underrepresented minority, Pell-eligible, and first-generation college students. Experience teaching introductory college courses. Knowledge of best practices in first-year student support and engagement. Ability to analyze data and use it to inform program development and improvement.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position under the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act Crimes reported to them or that they witness. CSA training is required.
