It is not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.JOB SUMMARYThe Postdoctoral candidate will perform applied research and produce methodologies, data, software, and/or scientific reports/results documenting their results. They will work closely with Prof. Daniel Aldrich and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) team to integrate the results of their research into the larger PREPARES project and capability. For more about the Providing Research and End-user Products to Accelerate Readiness and Environmental Security (PREPARES) project please visit: PREPARES | PNNL.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSRecent PhD (>2020) in social sciences with deep knowledge of GIS mapping, advanced regression analysis, and academic article publication. Must be willing to work independently.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
Initiate, execute and complete clinical research 50%
  • Identify overarching resiliency framework.
  • Identify the data sources and develop collection methodology.
  • Collect social capital and social infrastructure data.
  • Well-formed data will be provided including metadata as to the source, format, and general characteristics of the data. Data will be provided in commonly used, machine readable formats such as ESRI shapefiles / geodatabases (spatial data) or csv/Microsoft Excel workbooks (tabular data).
  • Social Infrastructure data - Well-formed data will be provided including metadata as to the source, format, and general characteristics of the data. Data will be provided in commonly used, machine readable formats such as ESRI shapefiles / geodatabases (spatial data) or csv/Microsoft Excel workbooks (tabular data).
  • Measure societal resilience: leverage the social capital and infrastructure data that was collected to then calculate societal resilience values for the priority case study.


Prepare and write final research report and spreadsheet 40%
  • Define key terms (resiliency, adaptive capacity, social capital, social infrastructure), how they relate to each other, and their specific metrics definitions.
  • Connect how these terms are built from observable data.
  • Outline data collection methodology.
  • Identify how the methodology that was adapted and applied to this priority case study could be leveraged against other societies and whether it could be universally applicable to different societies.
  • Outline methodology limitations and variables.
  • Develop spreadsheet identifying the data collection categories, data layers, layer characteristics (Spatio-temporal resolution, attribute parameters, key assumptions, proper use, etc.), and layer sources.
  • Provide societal resiliency metrics using well-formed data at the Admin2 or higher spatial resolution, to include error bounds on the results.


Lab Collaboration Support 10%
  • Work closely with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) team.
  • Perform lab management duties as needed.
  • Train students and other personnel.
