Job Summary:
Come join Bucknell University's Facilities team as an Electronics Tech I or Tech II and play a key role in maintaining and managing critical electronic systems across our campus!

As a Tech I, you'll be responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining essential systems such as fire alarms, card access, and security systems. You'll also manage mobile two-way radios, sound systems for sporting venues, scoreboards, and clocks. In addition, you'll assist with testing sprinkler, kitchen hood, and halon systems to ensure safety across campus.

As a Tech II, you'll take on all the responsibilities of a Tech I with added leadership in system improvements. In this role, you'll also perform semi-annual testing of safety systems and manage projects to enhance life safety and card access systems, including design and installation.

What You'll Do:

Tech I:

Life Safety Systems Maintenance & Support |50%| Maintain campus' card access and addressable life safety systems. Includes installation, troubleshooting, repairing and replacing of microprocessor based control panels and field devices. Also includes monitoring nodal fire alarm system and assisting in testing of sprinkler control, kitchen hood and halon systems.

Electronic System Maintenance, Troubleshooting, & Inventory Management |25%| Troubleshoot, maintain, inspect, and repair electronic systems of all types including but not limited to mobile two-way radio systems and sporting venue sound systems and scoreboards, clocks and power tools. Manage/maintain spare parts inventory. Notify supervisor of parts needed to ensure repairs are made in a timely manner.

Work Orders & Preventative Maintenance |15%| Utilize Facilities CMMS system to create work orders and update equipment. Assist Supervisor in establishing predictive/preventive maintenance procedures for electrical equipment. Communicate effectively with Public Safety, peers and administration status of fire system repairs and outages.

Event Support |10%| Provide technical and maintenance support for events (i.e. sporting events, student social events, University events, etc.) Provide technical support and training regarding electronic systems to peers. Support and promote Bucknell's sustainability and energy conservation efforts.

Tech II:

Life Safety Systems Maintenance & Support |50%| Maintain campus' card access and addressable life safety systems. Includes installation, troubleshooting, programming, repairing and replacing of microprocessor based control panels and field devices. Includes monitoring nodal fire alarm system and assisting in testing of sprinkler control, kitchen hood and halon systems.

Project Management |20%| Implement/manage life safety, card access and intrusion/panic alarm system projects and upgrades including assisting in the design of the system and programming and installation of the components for the system.

Electronic System Maintenance, Troubleshooting, & Inventory Management |10%| Troubleshoot, maintain, inspect, and repair electronic systems of all types including but not limited to mobile two-way radio systems and sporting venue sound systems and scoreboards, clocks and power tools. Support co-gen plant controls systems as required. Manage/maintain spare parts inventory. Notifies supervisor of parts needed to ensure repairs are made in a timely manner.

Other duties as assigned: Participates in all aspects of program and department planning and in the establishment of department goals and objectives.

What You'll Bring:

Tech I:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent with strong math and shop background.
  • Two-year technical degree or equivalent training in fire alarm systems or electronics discipline OR two years of hands-on experience in troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of commercial/institutional electronic systems.
  • Working knowledge of the means, techniques, and sequences of residential, commercial and institutional electrical construction, maintenance, preventive maintenance techniques and repair.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA and National Electrical Code, as well as addressable life safety systems.
  • Knowledge in the operation and use of multimeters, amp probes and other electrical troubleshooting equipment.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications for electrical and life safety systems.
  • Computer competency including proficiency with word processing.
  • Valid driver's license.


Tech II:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Two-year technical degree or equivalent training in fire alarm systems and 2 years of hands-on experience in troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of commercial/institutional electronic systems OR four years of hands-on experience in troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of commercial/institutional electronic systems.
  • Working knowledge of the means, techniques, and sequences of residential, commercial and institutional electrical construction, maintenance, preventive maintenance techniques and repair.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA and National Electrical Code, as well as addressable life safety systems.
  • Knowledge in the operation and use of multimeters, amp probes and other electrical troubleshooting equipment.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications for electrical and life safety systems.
  • Computer competency including proficiency with word processing.

Preferred, but not required:

Tech I:
  • Two years of hands-on experience in troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of commercial/institutional electronic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.

Tech II:
  • Five years of hands-on experience in troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of commercial/institutional electronic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.


Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to travel through buildings and grounds throughout campus including climbing stairs and ladders, using walkways, working on roofs and entering/exiting trenches, crawl spaces, confined spaces.
  • Must use proper safety equipment for hearing, head, eye, feet, hand and body protection.
  • Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Position works indoors and outdoors with occasional exposure to a wide range of environmental conditions, including heat, noise, dust, and dirt, and emergency situations.


Additional Information:
  • Position is classified as part of essential services. Individuals are required to report to work even if the campus is closed or has a delayed opening/early closing due to emergency/exigent circumstances.
  • Post-offer background checks, including criminal history and driving record, will be conducted.


Pay Range:

Tech I: $22.70 - $28.38

Tech II: $24.35 - $30.44

The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
