Laboratory Sciences Professional (Open Rank: Entry - Intermediate) - 35949 University Staff Description
University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus
Department: Anesthesiology
Job Title: Laboratory Sciences Professional (Open Rank: Entry - Intermediate)
Position: #00830887 - Requisition: #35949
Job Summary:
The Bonney Laboratory, opening in the Department of Anesthesiology in January 2025, will investigate small vessel disease in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. Our research will focus on the role of perivascular cells in maintaining the integrity and function of brain vascular networks. Specifically, we aim to understand the contributions of lesser-known perivascular cell types, such as fibroblasts and macrophages, in regulating brain vascular dynamics. We are interested in exploring how these cells regulate vascular function at both the cellular and ultrastructural levels, and how alterations in these perivascular cells contribute to disease progression.
We are currently seeking a professional research assistant to support lab management, including the maintenance of the mouse colony, and to assist with ongoing experiments. These experiments include, but are not limited to, in vivo two-photon microscopy, immunohistochemistry, single-cell transcriptomics, and 3D electron microscopy. Key responsibilities will include preparing solutions and samples, operating and maintaining lab instruments, and conducting data collection and analysis. The position offers an excellent opportunity to learn cutting-edge technologies, gain insights into the pathophysiology of perivascular cells, and support your professional development in a collaborative research environment.
The ideal candidate will have a background in neuroscience, cardiovascular science, or a related field. While experience with techniques such as animal surgery, fluorescence imaging (epifluorescent, confocal, two-photon, etc.), histology, image analysis, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, RNA extraction, and electron microscopy is not required, familiarity with any of these methods will be considered a plus.
Key Responsibilities:
- Learn and perform cranial window surgeries on mice.
- Monitor animals that have surgeries and provide support for animal husbandry, as needed.
- Learn and perform in vivo two-photon imaging on mice with cranial windows.
- Perform immunohistochemistry on post mortem mouse brain tissue.
- Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions.
- Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects; for example, perform experiments and tabulate, analyze research, pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials, and other items as needed.
- Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting, and communicating results also perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced.
- Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas as well as disposing of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines.
