Facilities Management (FM) at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Lead Equipment Mechanic! Outdoor Services provides high quality, professional grounds and landscape services to enhance a safe, aesthetically pleasing and environmentally conscious campus. FM provides a physical environment that promotes the advancement and transfer of knowledge. This role will perform, lead, and assign emergency and routine repair and maintenance tasks on light to heavy-duty grounds machinery and equipment associated with the FM Outdoor Services Team. Additional responsibilities include parts inventory management, PM scheduling, and collecting information and reporting on equipment repair expenses.

Who We Are


Facilities Management provides outdoor services to general fund areas and to several auxiliary funded facilities. Facilities Management Outdoor Services is responsible for grounds maintenance and irrigation system operation and maintenance for the general fund areas on campus.


What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Specialized, Heavy-Duty Equipment Repair & Maintenance
  • Diagnose problems, make repairs and perform preventative maintenance on specialized grounds equipment including multi-deck contour mowers, mid-sized and compact tractors and implements, skid steer loaders and attachments, backhoes, wood chippers and various utility vehicles. Inspect, diagnose, repair, rebuild and replace a wide variety of equipment systems such as engine, transmission, steering, driveline, braking, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic. Repairs may require fabrication of parts or welding parts and structural members. Keep accurate records of labor and parts expended on repairs. Report any missing equipment and all accidents that result in physical damage to University vehicle(s) or property.

Small Equipment Repair & Maintenance
  • Troubleshoot, repair and maintain small and handheld grounds equipment including push mowers, string trimmers, blowers, edgers, chainsaws, golf carts etc.. This includes repairing small motors, batteries, electrical circuits, wiring, solenoids, pumps, switches, bearings AC and DC systems. This duty includes performing all preventative maintenance on this type of equipment, which is powered by a variety of diesel, gas, and rechargeable electric batteries.

Work Lead/Crew Member Responsibilities
  • Function as the work leader for the Outdoor Services Assistant Mechanic by coordinating and assigning work assignments. Conduct training for staff (full time, temporary, student employees). Demonstrate an "eye for detail" when making and assessing work assignments. Assess quality of work done by assistant mechanic, and other Outdoor Services employees, on equipment maintenance and repairs. Coordinate and schedule repairs with supervisors of each crew and other crew leads. Work and coordinate with outside vendors and equipment owners to schedule estimates and repairs. Assess skills and knowledge of the Outdoor Services Assistant Mechanic and provide guidance and recommendations to this role. Make recommendations to their supervisor for enhanced trainings and continuing education based on the equipment inventory, skills, and knowledge. Provide timely updates on equipment repairs, associated costs, and any delays. Track parts and labor associated with repairs. Inform supervisor of activities or problems impacting on grounds maintenance operations. Coordinate with Supervisors and other employees, as needed, to ensure smooth daily operations, collaboration, and consistency of work efforts. Ensure timecards and charges are accurate.

Snow Removal & Ice Abatement
  • Support snow removal/ice abatement operations by making emergency repairs to plows, salt spreaders and other essential equipment. Conduct or participate in annual snow removal equipment readiness inspection, compile list of necessary repairs, prioritize and complete repairs identified. Repairs may include welding and fabrication of parts to keep vehicle snow plowing systems operational, including plows, blades, mounting hardware, hydraulic and electrical systems. May assist with snow removal and ice abatement operations using various equipment.

Shop, Equipment & Tool Maintenance
  • Responsible for the proper use, maintenance and care of all assigned equipment (vehicles, grounds utility vehicles, equipment lifts, power washers, specialty equipment, hand tools, etc.). Maintain neat and orderly shop with tools and supplies in their proper location. Prioritize and maintain parts stock for all equipment and know when to re-order stock. As equipment changes and becomes more modernized, ensure proper tools are on hand to diagnose problems and make repairs. Maintain access to all safety equipment.

Safety
  • Adhere to all department and University safety guidelines and policies. Safe operation and repair of vehicles, equipment and tools; provide instruction on safe operating procedures to Staff, Work Leaders or Supervisor as needed and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. Ensure all direct reports perform daily duties using appropriate safe work practices. Provide and train all staff on appropriate safety equipment, PPE, and proper use of PPE applying authorized purchasing practices. Be aware of surroundings and ensure work area is clear and free of other personnel, tools, trip hazards, flammables, etc. prior to commencing work. Understand all the aspects of the tools and materials that they work with, including welders, torches, gasses, compressors, tools, and many other types of tools and equipment in this field. Be familiar with the "Outdoor Services Safety Manual" and provide recommendations to the Outdoor Services Safety Committee to improve safety.


What You Should Know

  • This in-person position will work five (5) eight-hour work days per week, Monday-Friday between the hours of 6:00am and 5:00pm, based on staffing requirements of the department. Occasional work outside of normal hours and/or weekend work may be required based on needs of department and/or essential services designation.
  • This role is eligible for our Facilities Management Employee Referral Program.


What We Can Offer

  • The annual salary range for this position is $57,708-$74,000.
  • If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024.

What We Require

  • Four (4) years of relevant experience, with current proficiency at the journey level OR a combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience equal to four (4) years.
  • Must be a resident of Colorado.
  • Must have a valid CO driver's license.
