Part-Time Embedded Peer Coach

Campus Location: Primarily on Lynn Campus

8 Positions Available

Work Schedule: Varies; 5-6 hours per week.

SALARY: $16.80 per hour. This is a non-benefited position

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The role of the Embedded Peer Coach (EPC) is to promote persistence from semester to semester for a successful academic experience at North Shore Community College by providing mentoring and connecting the students of their assigned course to various services offered by the College. Embedded coaches serve as a point of contact at the College, they help students identify obstacles to academic performance, and assist them by jointly generating solutions for overcoming those challenges. Embedded coaches assist and support students with realizing their full potential by providing effective skills such as test taking, time management and strategies for studying. The EPC will also participate in required training sessions and team meetings. They will also serve as ambassadors and help promote the program to their fellow students.

This position is designed for NSCC students. The mission of North Shore Community College's Academic Support Area is to support the learning efforts of the students, faculty teaching, and the larger goals within each program of study.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Attend required training sessions and team meetings throughout the semester.
  2. Attend their assigned course's weekly meetings.
  3. Attend meetings with assigned faculty.
  4. Complete independent training as needed.
  5. Maintain working and current knowledge of other areas and services of the college to ease the students' process and help students demystify college policies and procedures.
  6. Encourage students to achieve self-awareness to gain a greater understanding of their strengths, values, and interests.
  7. Work with the students in their assigned course to ease their transition to college life.
  8. Build relationships with students by maintaining active support through recurring check-ins and offering reminders, using multiple agreed upon communication platforms (e.g., phone, email, chats, google messaging, and Zoom video meetings.) Reach out to assigned students as directed.
  9. Assist students with academic preparation, time management, study skills, and academic technologies.
  10. Assist students with identifying barriers, exploring solutions, and leveraging resources by encouraging students to take an active role in their learning.
  11. Maintain working knowledge of and stay current with college resources, and appropriate personnel so as to educate students on college policies and procedures.
  12. Refer students appropriately to Tutoring, Academic Advising, Financial Aid, Accessibility Services, TRIO, RISE, and other student support services.
  13. Track and maintain accurate records of conversations and interventions with students.
  14. Meet with supervisory staff regularly.
  15. Perform other duties as necessary and as requested by the supervisor.


Job Requirements:
  • Cumulative grade point average of B- (2.70) or higher and good academic standing at North Shore Community College;
  • Recommendation from an NSCC staff or faculty member;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Cooperates and works well with both peers and supervisors.
  • Ability to work remotely if needed with access to reliable internet for regular video conferencing.
  • Ability to become familiar with appropriate systems such as Navigate.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interact, serve and respect students from all walks of life regardless of any genders, gender identities, cultural/ethnic backgrounds, ages, abilities among others.
  • Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.
