General Purpose
Under general supervision, provides support services to District facilities in multiple trades; learns and provides semi-skilled and skilled building maintenance and repair in plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry and general maintenance; maintains facilities in a safe and secure condition; and performs related duties as assigned.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

- Learns and performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks and assists journey-level mechanics/ technicians involved in the inspection, maintenance, servicing and repair of District facilities and equipment; performs plumbing repairs on drains, toilets and bathroom fixtures; assists in repair of water lines and sewer lines; repairs leaks; fixes and replaces lighting and switches; repairs doors and frames; responds to maintenance requests and performs other assigned jobs.
- May maintain and clean swimming pool; monitors water temperature; checks and corrects chemical levels; inspects, services and adjusts or cleans pumps, motors, injectors and skimmers; may maintain and clean a college's fountains including pumps and chemical balances.
- As directed, cleans, repairs and maintains lighting fixtures and systems, equipment, appliances and fixtures; rewires and replaces defective devices and worn parts.
- Alters, repairs or constructs articles and structures of wood and other materials, such as partitions, counters, scaffolds and forms; constructs, assembles and installs cabinets, desks, tables and chairs; operates power saws, routers, planers, sanders, joiners and other woodworking equipment.
- Repairs and paints a variety of surfaces; applies wood finishes, stains and sealers; inspects and repairs roof leaks and cleans gutters.
- Performs general building maintenance; installs whiteboards and corkboards; repairs furniture, small appliances, office cabinets and similar items; repairs lock mechanisms and adjusts door openers.
- As trained, operates a forklift, boom lift and scissor lift when needed to accomplish assigned tasks.
- Operates a motor vehicle to visit vendors for parts pickup.
- Responds to radio calls directing a maintenance response.
- Creates and maintains electronic service and repair records.
OTHER DUTIES
- Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of historically minoritized groups and participates in professional development activities to increase cultural competency to enhance equity-minded practices within the District.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Employment Standards / Minimum Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Basic repair methods, standards, materials and equipment involved in the operation, inspection and maintenance of buildings and appurtenant equipment/fixtures, including plumbing, carpentry, locksmithing, painting and minor electrical.
- Basic knowledge of boilers, HVAC, plumbing and mechanical systems.
- Operation of hand and power tools and equipment common to several skilled maintenance and repair trades.
- Methods of repairing and maintaining water, sewer and other piping systems.
- Basic elements of electronic and digital control systems.
- Applicable building and safety code requirements.
- Safety hazards and necessary safety precautions/policies sufficient to establish a safe work environment for self and others.
- Shop mathematics.
- Written and oral communication skills including correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
- Uses and operations of computers and the District's maintenance software applications.
- Basic recordkeeping techniques.
- District organization, functions, rules, policies and procedures applicable to assigned areas of responsibility.
Skills and Abilities to:
- Learn and perform skilled building maintenance and repair work applicable to multiple building trades including plumbing, electrical, locksmith, HVAC, carpentry, painting and related areas.
- Learn, operate and maintain specialized tools used in building trades in a safe and efficient manner.
- Read and understand mechanical and electrical blueprints, drawings and schematics.
- Prepare and maintain basic records accurately.
- Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Operate a computer and use standard business software.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those encountered in the course of work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and one year of work experience in one or more of the building trades; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Forklift certification is required within three months of hire or appointment to the position.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees perform heavy physical labor with constant standing and walking for extended periods; walk over rough or uneven surfaces; push, pull, lift and carry heavy objects weighing up to 75 pounds; bend, stoop and kneel; repetitively use upper extremities on a regular basis; use manual dexterity to operate motorized equipment and vehicles in a safe manner; operate an electrical cart; travel to various locations on and off District campuses as needed to conduct District business.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve basic problems; use basic math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or new skills; work under deadlines with interruptions; and interact with District staff, other organizations and the public.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Employees work in indoor and outdoor environments in all weather conditions including rain and extreme heat; are exposed to work on slippery or uneven surfaces; work while wearing personal protection equipment including respirators, protective gloves and footwear, face shields, goggles, spray suits and rain suits. Employees are subject to exposure to the sun for extended periods, to dust, dirt, oil and grease, diesel fuel, smoke and pollen, hazardous materials such as pesticides, solvents and other toxic chemicals and fumes, extreme noise and fumes/exhaust from equipment. Employees work with or around dangerous equipment and machinery with moving parts.
The employee may be required to travel to locations other than assigned work site and to adjust to work schedule changes and requirements to work overtime.
