Reporting to the President, the Vice President, DEI and Engagement will integrate access and belonging to the college's mission through high-impact practices, unique co-curricular opportunities, vibrant campus engagement, and strong community relationships. The incumbent in this role willprovide strategic leadership in the development of a comprehensive and integrated framework that is focused on the overall student experience including access, inclusivity and belonging for all students, including those of non-traditional backgrounds such as first generation college students, military and veteran students, students with disabilities and unique abilities, and students with limited resources; synchronizing and leveraging past and current efforts; and introducing emerging practices to move the institution forward in becoming a more welcoming and inclusive learning and working environment. The incumbent will facilitate faculty, staff, and student development by creating opportunities for open dialogue and free expression of all viewpoints to promote civil discourse and inclusive teaching and learning environments.

The Vice President, DEI and Engagement will oversee the following: Multicultural Services, International Student Services, HSI initiatives, Student Accommodations, Student Experience, Student Ombuds, and Veterans Services.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities


  • Strategic Leadership and Planning: Develop and implement a comprehensive, integrated framework focused on the overall student experience including inclusivity and belonging for all students, with special emphasis on non-traditional backgrounds. Provide insight and direction for building a culture of inclusion and belonging with all employees. Align inclusivity and belonging initiatives with the college's overall mission and strategic goals. Identify and introduce emerging practices to enhance the institution's inclusivity and welcoming environment. Continuously assess and evaluate the effectiveness of access and engagement programs, making data-driven improvements.
  • Oversee the Hispanic Service Institution Initiative: Lead the college's efforts to achieve and maintain Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) status in collaboration with the College's HSI Lead and: a. Develop and implement strategies to increase Hispanic student enrollment, retention, and success. b. Collaborate with Recruitment, Enrollment and Retention, and Learning, to create targeted programs and services for Hispanic students. c. Ensure the college's curriculum, co-curricular activities, and campus culture reflect and support the Hispanic community. d. Oversee the preparation and submission of HSI designation applications and related grant proposals. e. Once HSI status is achieved, lead efforts to fully leverage this designation for the benefit of all students, with a focus on Hispanic student success. f. Foster partnerships with Hispanic community organizations, businesses, and K-12 schools to create pathways for Hispanic student access and success. g. Regularly assess and report on progress towards HSI goals and the impact of HSI-related initiatives.
  • Program Development and Implementation: Design and oversee high-impact practices that promote student inclusivity and engagement. Create unique co-curricular opportunities that foster a sense of belonging among diverse student populations. Oversee the development of targeted co-curricular and experience programs for first-generation college students, military and veteran students, students with disabilities and unique abilities, and students with limited resources. Implement initiatives that promote vibrant campus engagement for all students.
  • Community Relationships and Partnerships: Establish and maintain strong relationships with community organizations to support student access and success. Collaborate with external partners to create pathways for non-traditional students to access higher education. Represent the college in community forums and events related to access and inclusion in higher education.
  • Faculty and Staff Development: In collaboration with the Human Resources Talent Strategy team and the College's Center for Teaching Excellence facilitate opportunities for faculty and staff development in areas of inclusivity, accessibility, and engagement. Create platforms for open dialogue and free expression of all viewpoints to promote civil discourse. Provide guidance and resources to faculty for developing inclusive teaching and learning environments. Partner with the office of Human Resources training and development team to coordinate training and professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.
  • Student/Employee Support and Advocacy: Oversee the development and implementation of support services for non-traditional and underrepresented student populations. Advocate for policies and practices that enhance accessibility and inclusivity across all areas of the college. Ensure that student voices are heard and considered in decision-making processes related to access and engagement. Champion social justice initiatives and implement restorative practices to create a more equitable and just campus community: a. Develop and oversee programs that promote social justice awareness and action among students, faculty, and staff. b. Implement restorative justice practices as an alternative to punitive measures in addressing campus conflicts and disciplinary issues. c. Collaborate with relevant departments to integrate social justice principles into curriculum and co-curricular activities. d. Lead efforts to address systemic inequities within the institution and promote a culture of accountability and healing. e. Provide training and resources on social justice and restorative practices to all members of the campus community. f. Establish partnerships with community organizations focused on social justice to extend the impact beyond the campus.
  • Assessment and Reporting: Develop metrics and assessment tools to measure the success of access and engagement initiatives. Prepare regular reports for the President and other stakeholders on the progress and impact of access and engagement efforts. Use data to inform decision-making and continuous improvement of programs and services.
  • Budget Management: Develop and manage the budget for the division. Seek and secure additional funding through grants and partnerships to support access and engagement initiatives.
  • Institutional Culture Change: Lead efforts to foster a more welcoming and inclusive learning and working environment across the institution. Promote a culture of belonging and inclusivity among all college constituencies. Address systemic barriers to access and engagement within the institution.
  • Cross Functional Relationships and Collaborative Teamwork: Establishes, maintains, and enhances positive work relationships with staff, faculty, and administrators. Work closely with other departments (e.g., Admissions, Enrollment, Retention, Learning) to ensure a cohesive approach to access and engagement. Synchronize and leverage past and current efforts across the institution to maximize impact. Lead cross-functional teams in implementing college-wide initiatives related to access and belonging.
  • Leadership and Supervision: Develops and manages a high performing team of highly skilled and motivated staff focused on the delivery of quality and value-added services, and allocates cross-functional responsibilities and work processes. Responsibilities include hiring, coaching/mentoring, performance management, and progressive discipline as needed.
  • Continuous Learning & Professional Development: Maintains current knowledge of best practices and standards in higher education with an emphasis on community Colleges. Actively organizes and/or participates in applicable workgroups, trainings, workshops, seminars, committees and professional associations or conferences to promote continuous learning.
  • Other duties: Performs other related duties within the scope of the position as required for the efficient operation of the division and to support institutional objectives.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

Compliance with all state, federal, and accreditation standards/requirements, as well as all MATC policies and procedures.

Required Education & Experience:

Master's degree in education administration, student affairs, social justice, multicultural education, behavioral or social sciences, or related field; Seven (7) or more years of progressive leadership experience working in higher education with a focus on student success, access, and equity; Five (5) years of management experience that includes managing positions at the Director level or higher. Experience working with diverse student populations, particularly first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented minority students.

Preferred Education & Experience:

Doctorate degree in closely related field with ten (10) or more years of progressive leadership experience working in higher education with a focus on student success, access, and equity; Seven (7) or more years of management experience that includes managing positions at the Director level or higher. Experience with or knowledge of HSI designation process and/or other federal designation programs (e.g., MSI, AANAPISI).

Preferred Licensure/Certification: Social Justice and/or Restorative Practices certification; DEI Certification

Position StatusThis position is full-time, 1.0 FTE/40+ hours per week. Hours are varied but are generally between 8am and 5pm Monday through Friday. Some evenings and weekends are required based on student programs and initiatives.
