Job Description:
The Academic Advisor is a member of a nine-person undergraduate/graduate academic advising team in the Academic Advising Office at the Newhouse School. Each advisor provides general academic advising for approximately 340 undergraduate and graduate students, as well as pre-registration advising and progress-toward-degree advising. Works with a wide variety of populations including at-risk students (probation, readmission, suspension), incoming first year students and external transfers, intra-university transfers, military students, faculty and administration. The Academic Advisor works with students to develop customized plans to track academic coursework in alignment with career goals. They design, update and deliver workshops for undergraduate students on topics related to major and/or minor selection, program requirements, first year registration and course selection.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide academic advising on a variety of topics including majors and minors, dual majors, studying abroad, degree progress, fulfilling requirements, and post-graduation plans - in conjunction with the Newhouse Career Development Center - through one-on-one and group sessions, for assigned cohort of undergraduates.
  • Ensure requirements are met for all undergraduate students for on-time graduation.
  • Provide degree audits, establish regular communication with advisees, and maintain up-to-date and accurate student records utilizing Universitys prescribed software.
  • Project management for projects assigned by the Director of Advising for a variety of programs and processes to achieve Newhouse student advising goals. These projects may include: handling first-term enrollment for newly matriculated students, training and managing peer advising program, advising public communication minors, assisting with student retention efforts, working with probation students, overseeing yearly publication production, and/or outreach to faculty.
  • Provide expertise, support and direction to other advisers in relations to assigned projects. Will evaluate and give feedback for continuous improvement for assigned projects.
  • Develop, update, and deliver a variety of workshops for undergraduate students on topics such as: major and/or minor selection, program requirements, first year registration and course selection, sophomore advising seminars and off campus study opportunities.
  • Support planning of special events that facilitate group advising, including collaborative events across campus that pertain to Newhouse students.
  • Collaborate and maintain relationships with faculty and staff in schools and colleges across the University to help identify and guide students towards successful college and post-college paths.
  • Partner with Newhouse Career Development Center in helping to achieve education and career goals.
  • Serve as main point of contact with students who are wishing to change majors or transfer to another college and guide them through various program options in the University.
  • Evaluate and approve all external AP/IB, transfer credit for first year, intra university transfer students and external transfer students.
  • Responsible for advising and approving all first term students course choices. In addition, map out major progression to ensure timely graduation for all transfer students.
