Job Summary
The Institute of Cognitive Science and the Human Bio-Behavioral Signals (HUBBS) Laboratory at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a highly motivated Researcher to join an interdisciplinary project at the intersection of artificial intelligence, speech analytics, behavioral health, and human performance. The successful candidate will contribute to the development, adaptation, and evaluation of speech-based AI technologies for monitoring team functioning and supporting behavioral health assessments.
The researcher will be responsible for processing and analyzing speech data, developing machine learning models that quantify team functioning from speech and language, designing interpretable AI indicators for operational decision support, and conducting longitudinal analyses of team dynamics in long-duration missions. The position will involve close collaboration with behavioral scientists and stakeholders to ensure that AI-generated insights are relevant and human-centered.
Ideal candidates will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, natural language processing, speech and audio processing, computational behavioral science, and human-centered AI. Experience with Python, machine learning frameworks, speech analytics, and statistical data analysis is highly desirable. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams are essential.

Who We Are
The Institute of Cognitive Science (ICS) at the University of Colorado Boulder is a world-renowned interdisciplinary research institute dedicated to understanding the mind, brain, and behavior through the integration of perspectives from computer science, psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, education, and related fields. Within ICS, the HUman Bio-Behavioral Signals (HUBBS) Laboratory develops artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to better understand human behavior, communication, well-being, and team performance in real-world settings. Our interdisciplinary research combines speech and language processing, multimodal sensing, behavioral science, and human-centered AI to address challenges in healthcare, mental health, education, and team science.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Develop, adapt, and evaluate speech-based machine learning models for quantifying team functioning and behavioral health.
- Process and analyze audio, speech, language, and other behavioral datasets.
- Design and implement pipelines for audio preprocessing, speaker diarization, speech transcription, feature extraction, and machine learning model development.
- Conduct statistical analyses and validation studies to assess the reliability, interpretability, and operational utility of speech-based indicators of team functioning.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary partners, including behavioral scientists, operational psychologists, and stakeholders, to translate research findings into practical decision-support tools.
- Contribute to the design of human-centered visualizations and reporting interfaces that communicate AI-generated insights to end users.
- Prepare technical reports, conference papers, journal manuscripts, and presentations describing project findings.
- Participate in regular project meetings, contribute to project planning and execution, and support coordination among collaborating institutions.
- Assist with data management, documentation, and compliance with research and data governance requirements.
What You Should Know
The position is highly interdisciplinary and will involve close collaboration with researchers in computer science, cognitive science, behavioral health, and human factors. Successful candidates should be comfortable working in a research environment that combines technical innovation with real-world operational applications. The position offers opportunities to contribute to high-impact publications, participate in collaborations with leading researchers and practitioners, and help shape next-generation technologies for supporting human performance and team functioning.
What We Can Offer
This is an hourly position at a rate of $30 per hour.
Benefits
Temporary positions at the University of Colorado are not benefits-eligible, however, all positions are eligible for paid sick leave.
Be Statements
Be ambitious. Be groundbreaking. Be Boulder.
What We Require
