PS Nurse Practitioner

Job Summary

Great opportunity for a Utah-licensed Nurse Practitioner to join a dedicated, collaborative team providing comprehensive diabetes care across both inpatient and outpatient settings.

This position is full time with a dual role. Clinical care responsibilities will be split approximately 50/50 between inpatient and outpatient services.

Inpatient responsibilities:
Provide diabetes and hyperglycemia management for adult patients admitted to the hospital with a wide range of surgical and non-surgical conditions. Care includes management of complex metabolic issues related to kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, steroid therapy, enteral tube feeding, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and perioperative care.

Outpatient responsibilities:
Provide ongoing primary and specialty diabetes care to adult patients with diabetes and associated comorbidities, with an emphasis on long-term disease management, medication optimization, and patient education.

Successful candidates will demonstrate strong clinical expertise in managing hyperglycemia and diabetes across care settings and a solid understanding of related comorbidities. Comprehensive knowledge of the various types of diabetes and the medications used to treat each is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions

  1. Assesses the physical condition of a group of patients by performing physical examinations and obtaining medical histories.
  2. Formulates the medical plan and prognosis based on patient's condition.
  3. Consults with physician(s) regarding patient health care plans and treatment.
  4. Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess the patient's clinical problems and health care needs.
  5. Performs selected placement and interpretation of medical devices used in diabetes care.
  6. Initiates and/or recommends medical drug therapies or other forms of related therapeutic treatment and procedures in accordance with approved protocols/policy.
  7. Complies with medical records policies regarding the complete and accurate documentation of patient care. Initiates and maintains required records and legal documents.
  8. Participates in quality improvement activities.
  9. Counsels patients, families and significant others about health and illness, and promotes health maintenance.
  10. Evaluates, plans, implements, and re-evaluates the care of individuals requiring emergency measures.

Minimum Qualifications
Required
Licensure to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Utah.
Preferred
Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.
Utah State prescriptive privileges.
Licensure is obtained by completing a Master's degree in Nursing or equivalency (the only equivalency to the Master's degree is current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner) and a National Certification which requires the successful completion of a nationally accredited examination.
UHPPM 1-56 requires that newly hired non-physician providers apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Preferences
Comprehensive knowledge of diabetes and diabetic complications. Knowledge and ability to utilize motivational interviewing and other tools for health behavior change. Knowledge and ability to initiate and interpret continuous glucose monitoring (CGMS)and insulin pumps. Knowledge and ability to treat diabetes in pregnancy, including knowledge of current standards of care for diabetes in pregnancy, including gestational diabetes and pre-existing type 1 and type 2 diabetes in the setting of pregnancy
