Salary Range: $ 76,292.00 - $101,723.00 annually. Compensation will be commensurate upon experience and qualifications. This position is Exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime provisions.
Work Location: Hybrid (60% On-site/40% Remote)

Summary
The Senior Network Engineer serves as a technical expert within the Office of Information Technology at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS), supporting the design, implementation, and optimization of campus-wide network infrastructure. This position is responsible for day-to-day operations, ongoing development, and optimization of routing, switching, backbone, and advanced wireless systems, RADIUS services, and DDI network services (DNS, DHCP, and IP Address Management). The engineer ensures reliable, secure, and high-performance connectivity for academic, research, and administrative functions. Key responsibilities include managing integrated core network services, troubleshooting complex network issues, deploying new technologies, and collaborating with IT staff, campus departments, and external partners to deliver robust networking solutions across all university locations.
Essential Functions
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
Core Network Operations (40%)
- Manage, configure, and maintain campus-wide routing, core, access, server, and storage network infrastructure, supporting both core and backbone networks.
- Implement and optimize protocols such as OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, HSRP, VRRP, and LACP.
- Oversee network connectivity and ensure high performance and reliability across all university locations.
Wireless Network Operations (20%)
- Support and maintain advanced wireless solutions, including mobility controllers.
- Configure and troubleshoot wireless controllers and supporting infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot and resolve advanced wireless network issues to maintain optimal connectivity and ensure high-performance operation of the wireless environment.
DDI and RADIUS Network Services (15%)
- Administer and maintain integrated core network services: DNS (Domain Name System), DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), IP Address Management (IPAM), and network authentication systems including RADIUS services.
- Monitor and optimize DDI and RADIUS systems to ensure reliable, secure, and high-performance network operations.
Network Security & Services (10%)
- Manage campus firewalls, VPNs (primary, secondary, cloud, site-to-site), and remote access technologies.
- Implement firewall rules, tunnels, and routing policies to safeguard network resources.
- Provide escalation support for troubleshooting and resolution of network data and security issues.
Infrastructure Operations & Automation (5%)
- Perform software updates and lifecycle management for networking hardware and software.
- Automate network tasks using scripting languages and platforms such as Ansible.
Network Monitoring & Analytics (5%)
- Implement and manage network monitoring tools to collect, analyze, and report on network statistics and performance metrics.
- Use monitoring data to proactively identify issues, optimize network resources, and support capacity planning.
Collaboration & Documentation (5%)
- Diagram network architectures and document configurations.
- Collaborate with IT teams and campus stakeholders to deliver technical solutions.
- Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical colleagues.

Qualifications
Education:
- To be considered for this role, you must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
Experience:
- Proven track record in designing, configuring, and managing large-scale enterprise networks.
- Demonstrated expertise in Cisco IOS/NX-OS, HPE Aruba switches, and wireless systems.
- Advanced knowledge of routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, EIGRP) and redundancy technologies (HSRP, VRRP).
- Experience managing campus firewalls, VPNs, and remote access solutions.
- Experience with Cisco Nexus and HPE Aruba platforms, automating network tasks using Ansible or similar tools, and managing networks in an educational environment is highly desirable.
Special Qualifications:
- A current industry certification in routing (a CCNP Routing and Switching or equivalent) is highly preferred. If not currently certified, certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
- Security certifications (such as Fortinet Certified Professional) and/or HPE networking certifications are highly desirable.
