Definition:
The West Valley College Cilker School of Art and Design Department of Architecture & Design is seeking a talented individual to fill the position of Industrial Design Lab Faculty Specialist.
West Valley College is part of the West Valley-Mission Community College District. Under the direction of the Dean of the Cilker School of Art and Design, the Industrial Design Lab Faculty Specialist will serve in a tenure-track faculty role with an integrated instructional and lab assignment. This position carries a 50% teaching load and 50% lab load with the delivery of high-quality Industrial Design education while ensuring the safe, effective, and innovative operation of the Schools Maker Space fabrication facilities.

The Industrial Design Lab Faculty Specialist will teach a range of lower-division Industrial Design courses, integrating design thinking, materials and processes, digital fabrication, user experience and emerging technologies into a hands-on, student-centered curriculum aligned with industry standards and transfer articulation requirements. In parallel, the faculty member will provide academic-year leadership of the Maker Space, overseeing daily operations, equipment use, safety protocols, and student access; supporting instructional labs across multiple disciplines; and collaborating with faculty to integrate fabrication resources into coursework.

As a tenure-track faculty member, the instructor will also participate in curriculum development, program assessment, student mentoring, and shared governance; contribute to program growth and industry partnerships; and support equity-minded teaching practices that foster an inclusive, innovative learning environment for a diverse student population.

Assignment:
This is a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track faculty position that begins in Fall 2026. Instructional assignments may include day and/or evening classes, Monday thru Saturday, as needed and rotate among the Industrial Design faculty. It is expected that over several semesters all levels of Industrial Design offered at the college will be taught. This position is represented by the West Valley-Mission Federation of Teachers (WVMFT / AFT Local 6554).

  • $97,318 - $157,048 annually, based upon academic achievement, teaching and related experience (26-27 Academic Salary Schedule, Steps 1-9).

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Education - Possess one of the following:
  • Any bachelors degree or higher and two (2) years of professional experience directly related to the discipline; OR
  • Any associates degree and six (6) years of professional experience directly related to the discipline; OR
  • A valid California Community College Instructors Credential in Industrial Design; OR
  • The equivalent of the above.

2. Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.



Desired Qualification:
The ideal candidate will also demonstrate the following desired qualifications:
  • Bachelors or higher degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Integrated Design, Design Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Teaching and/or training experience in an academic, studio, lab, or industry setting appropriate to lower-division college instruction.
  • Hands-on experience supervising, managing, or working in a fabrication lab, maker space, or prototyping environment, including responsibility for equipment operation, materials, workflow, and safety protocols.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with prototyping and digital fabrication tools, including filament-based 3D printers (e.g., MakerBot Method, Creality K2), resin 3D printers (e.g., Formlabs), CNC engraving equipment, and Universal Laser Systems laser cutting and etching machines.
  • Experience supporting and mentoring students in a hands-on, lab-based learning environment, including instruction in safe, effective, and responsible use of fabrication technologies.

Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:
  • Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation, in-class activities, evaluation of students work, consultation with students outside of class (scheduling time beyond normal office hours if necessary), ensuring regular effective student contact for Distance Education courses, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught and other efforts related to the teaching of the assigned classes, and participate in the process of SLO assessment and evaluation and use the results of these assessments in the process of continuously improving student learning.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records.
  • Submit, when due, all necessary reports, such as attendance, grade reports, rosters, class and office schedules.
  • File a syllabus for each course with the appropriate division offices.
  • Post and maintain office hours each week.
  • Provide each student with a current course syllabus as required by Title 5, which includes SLOs, classroom procedures, requirements and grading policies and provide a copy to the Division Office.
  • Refer students to appropriate college resources.
  • Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the members area of expertise.
  • Assume institutional responsibilities, essential to the ongoing operation and effective achievement of department, division, college and district programs.
