The Electrical Technology program at Long Beach City College is seeking a skilled and motivated professional to join our team as a Vocational Instructional Technician - Electrical/Electronics. In this role, you'll support hands-on instruction in our Electrical, Electronics, Networking, and Robotics programs. The ideal candidate will bring both technical expertise and a passion for student learning-helping prepare the next generation of technicians for success in high-demand industries.
You should have solid knowledge of:
  • Electrical and electronic theory, including interpreting wiring schematics, hardware, and materials common to the trade
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and basic programming principles
  • AutoCAD and other related software used in technical drawing and design
  • Operation and maintenance of hand, power, and shop tools and equipment
  • Safe work practices and regulations governing electrical and lab environments
  • Shop mathematics and practical problem-solving techniques
  • Regulations for handling hazardous materials and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local safety standards
  • Methods of student instruction and tutoring, and administrative procedures such as purchasing and recordkeeping

We are looking for someone who has obtained an Associate's degree in electronics or a closely related field; and two (2) years of electrical, electronics and/or network installation and maintenance experience.

Duties


GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, provides vocational instruction support in the electrical/electronics trades program, including networking and robotics; prepares equipment, materials, supplies and training aids for classroom instruction and student laboratory assignments; provides instruction and assists students in the proper use and operation of computer and shop equipment and tools; maintains a clean, safe and orderly learning environment; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Vocational Instructional Technician - Electrical/Electronics is responsible for assisting in maintaining, operating and providing support for the District's electrical, electronics, networking and robotics instructional program, including ordering and maintaining an inventory of equipment, tools, supplies and materials and preparing equipment, materials, tools and training aids for class instruction, demonstrations and student laboratory exercises. Incumbents perform a variety of support functions to assist faculty in the general operation of the electrical/electronics instructional program and may supervise the work of assigned work study students. Work assigned requires a detailed knowledge of subject areas applicable to the specific trades program and the ability to provide instruction to others in an effective manner.

Qualifications


Education, Training and Experience:

An Associate's degree in electronics or a closely related field; and two (2) years of electrical, electronics and/or network installation and maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Experience is evaluated on the basis of a verifiable 35 hour week, unless specified otherwise. Prorated part-time experience may be acceptable.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

  1. May require a valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance policy.
  2. A valid fork lift operator certification or the ability to obtain certification within six months of employment.
  3. An amateur radio license or the ability to obtain a license within six months of employment


Meeting the minimum requirements of the position does not guarantee advancement in the selection process. Candidate qualifications will be assessed to determine those who meet and exceed requirements, and are deemed most competitive amongst the applicant pool to proceed.

Selection Process:

The following examination segments are pass/fail and may be utilized during the selection process:
