Position Announcement


Utah Valley University's Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track position in Creative Writing specializing in fiction. The successful candidate will teach courses in creative writing and first-year composition in our growing undergraduate creative writing emphasis.

Applicants are required to have an MFA or PhD in creative writing by the time of appointment, a significant record of publication in fiction, and a demonstrated history of excellence in the teaching of writing. Candidates with PhDs and experience teaching in multiple genres are preferred. The standard teaching load is 4/4, with opportunities for reassigned time for writing program administration, student journal advising, or other service work. Qualifying applicants will be asked to submit letters of recommendation and a teaching portfolio (including a record of student ratings or other evidence of teaching effectiveness) at a future date. Summary of Responsibilities


  • Classroom instruction, lesson planning, lecturing, and grading all coursework
  • The professor's own ongoing writing, publication, and professional development (reading, research, conferences)
  • Meeting with students for academic planning, thesis advising, career guidance, and specific writing consultations.
  • Committee work, curriculum development, program administration, and community outreach.
