Job Summary
CIRES (the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, a research institute jointly sponsored by NOAA and CU Boulder) is searching for a research scientist on "Developing Global Emission Inventories for NOAA Air Quality Forecast Systems".
The NOAA Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL) is currently developing atmospheric chemistry and composition capabilities for the next-generation Unified Forecast System with Chemistry (UFS-Chem) model. UFS-Chem is designed to forecast air quality at both global and regional-scales, and facilitate cross NOAA line office research-to-operations priorities. As part of the modeling system, global emission inventories are needed as input to predict concentrations of atmospherically-relevant species, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ammonia (NH3), and aerosols. These include both anthropogenic and biogenic sources of emissions.
Specifically, this position will develop global emission inventories for the UFS-Chem model. This includes leveraging existing global inventory efforts (e.g., CAMS, CEDS) and compiling mosaics of regional inventories (e.g., MIX-ASIA, DACCIWA, PAPILA, GRA2PES, etc.). Critical to global emission inventory development is evaluation with tiered atmospheric composition observations (ground, airborne, spaceborne) to assess the fidelity and uncertainty of emissions, and identify areas for methodological improvement. Additionally, developing international collaborations and serving in leadership roles, including through the Global Emissions Initiative (GEIA), will be key to achieving success in the project.
CU is an Equal Opportunity Employer and complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws governing nondiscrimination in employment. We are committed to creating a workplace where all individuals are treated with respect and dignity, and we encourage individuals from all backgrounds to apply, including protected veterans and individuals with disabilities.
Who We Are
CIRES is an internationally recognized leader in innovative environmental science and research and is located at the University of Colorado Boulder. At CIRES, more than 900 environmental science professionals work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people's relationship with the planet. CIRES has partnered with NOAA since 1967, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at Earth's poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, solid Earth sciences, and more. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future environment by advancing scientific and societal understanding of the Earth system.
In the Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL) of NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratories, researchers build instruments to make precise measurements, conduct laboratory experiments, design and execute field missions, analyze observations, and use sophisticated computer models to better understand how our changing atmosphere is influencing climate - and therefore people.
