About the Department:

The Department of Teaching and Learning at Southern Methodist University, housed within the Simmons School of Education and Human Development, is a dynamic and innovative community dedicated to developing educators who are both scholars and leaders in their field. About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

This position is responsible for key administrative aspects of the department such as recruitment and marketing, admissions and advising, student communication and support, external partnerships, and faculty support. The position serves as a key member of the department's leadership team working with the department's faculty leadership and analyzes department data, and makes recommendations to the faculty.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as the key point of contact for prospective and enrolled students. Responsible for student communications, enrollment processes, monitoring program requirements and milestones, and my.SMU advisor assignments. Communicate with students through emails and learning management system to support them throughout the program. Manage the department's Ph.D. students and activities.

  • Lead the department's recruitment and retention strategies using effective recruitment tactics. Serve as key point of contact with the SMU Graduate School and managing the department's application software (i.e. Slate). Manage and analyze data for admissions. Support application reviews and monitor application processing.

  • Maintain documentation for all currently enrolled students (i.e. graduation requirements, Ph.D. milestones) and ensure completion for degree requirements and graduation.

  • Support the Director of Graduate Studies. Supervise student workers. Organize and support department events such as information sessions, orientation and onboarding activities for new students.

  • Support external partnerships to advance the mission of the department. Engage with consultants and other partners of the department. Liaison between the department's leadership, faculty, and external organizations. Additional duties as assigned to support the department.



Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree is required.

A minimum of four (4) years of experience is required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate with managing experience managing multiple projects is required. Candidate with experience in higher education administrative processes is desired. Working experience with Slate is desired.

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.
