GENERAL PURPOSE
Under direction, plans, schedules, assigns, supervises and participates in the work of custodial services; inspects ongoing sanitation of District building and facilities for completion and quality of custodial services; maintains inventory and orders custodial supplies and equipment; arranges and oversees furniture, equipment, supplies and material moves, and setup and breakdown for regular and special events; performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A Custodial Services Supervisor is distinguished from the Assistant Director, Facilities Planning, Maintenance and Operations in that an incumbent in the latter class has management responsibility for all facilities and grounds maintenance/operations and provides more complex budgetary and planning support to the Director.
Essential Functions
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
- Plans, schedules, assigns, supervises, and participates in the custodial activities of day or evening shift at one or more District campuses; interprets and communicates District policies to staff and ensures compliance with applicable federal, state and District safety regulations; contributes to the development of and monitors performance against the annual department budget; estimate costs and funding sources for special custodial service projects and staffing.
- Performs full supervisory activities, subject to management concurrence and in accordance with District policies, procedures, collective bargaining agreements and employee handbooks; interviews and participates in selection of new staff; establishes performance requirements, regularly monitors and evaluates performance; responds to grievances; with management concurrence, implements coaching or the progressive discipline process to address performance deficiencies; performs other activities relevant to supervision of assigned staff.
- Interprets, prioritizes and assigns work orders and plans work schedules to ensure custodial services are conducted in an efficient and effective manner; plans and supervises individual and team workloads at various sites to ensure the efficient utilization of staff, supplies and materials.
- Inspects and monitors custodial activities such as individual and team cleaning, trash collection and disposal, vacuuming, dusting, mopping, polishing, waxing, disinfecting, sanitizing, scrubbing and washing; inspects the cleanliness, security and safety of classrooms, meeting rooms, offices, gymnasium and athletic facilities, fountains, swimming pools, public areas, and surrounding grounds; places work orders for general building and facilities maintenance repairs.
- Confers with administration, faculty and staff to coordinate setups for special events; coordinates movement of furniture and equipment to relocate offices and to set up for meetings; ensures athletic facilities and locker rooms are cleaned, sanitized and prepared for athletic department use after athletic facility rentals.
- Plans and implements a regular program of safety, equipment usage and other training and licensing for staff; develops systems for the safe and proper use, handling and storage of cleaning supplies, chemicals and equipment; oversees cleaning and disposal of hazardous or infectious materials, including chemical solutions and medical waste; evaluates products and equipment from a safety perspective.
- Participates in sourcing custodial equipment and supplies; maintains inventory and purchases, places orders for needed supplies and equipment; receives, stores and maintains stock control and ensures delivery of custodial supplies and equipment to custodial staff; oversees the maintenance and repair of custodial equipment; may secure bids for larger equipment purchases and for contract services.
- Reviews and coordinates custodial services with external contract service providers and provides necessary direction and guidance.
- Prepares and maintains computerized records and reports related to custodial supplies, inventory, budget, work requests, personnel, injuries, equipment and facilities.
- Operates District vehicles, electric carts, forklifts, floor machines, buffers, vacuums, carpet extractors, floor dryers and electric hoists.

- Unlocks and secures classrooms, buildings and facilities.
- May respond to after-hour and emergency calls.
- May represent the District and/or department on internal or external committees.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements & Desirables
REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Graduation from high school or an accredited training program in custodial services and at least two years of responsible custodial experience, including one year of lead or supervisory experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses, Certificates and Other Requirements:
- A demonstrated commitment to equity-minded practices in support of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, college staff, and community members.
- A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program
- Forklift certification must be acquired within 60 days of employment or promotion.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Custodial practices, techniques and cleaning processes applicable to the cleaning, sanitation and servicing of District buildings and facilities.
- Proper methods, standards and equipment utilized with cleaning chemicals during custodial services including safe and effective operation of hand and power equipment used in custodial activities.
- Thorough knowledge of safety procedures used for moving and transporting heavy equipment and objects.
- Applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and health, sanitation and safety codes applicable to custodial maintenance and building sanitation and security.
- District practices and procedures for budgeting, purchasing and maintaining public records.
- Safety policies and safe work practices applicable to the work being performed.
- Board Policies, Administrative Procedures, Human Resources procedures and collective bargaining agreements.
- Principles and practices of Equal Employment Opportunity in hiring, retention, performance and advancement.
- Principles, practices and techniques of effective supervision including advising and training.
- Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Plan, schedule, assign, supervise and evaluate the work of custodial staff.
- Perform facilities cleaning and maintenance inspection.
- Plan and implement a safety training program for employees on the operation, maintenance, basic repair and storage of custodial equipment, cleaning supplies and hazardous materials.
- Define issues, analyze problems, evaluate alternatives and develop sound, independent conclusions and recommendations in accordance with laws, regulations, rules and policies.
- Set priorities in order to meet timelines and schedules and exercise sound, independent judgment within areas of responsibility.
- Inventory, estimate need and safely store, secure and dispose of cleaning and maintenance supplies, materials and equipment.
- Provide support to the administrator in ensuring compliance with department budget monitoring, and legal and administrative requirements.
- Understand, interpret, explain and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures, laws, codes and ordinances.
- Prepare correspondence, records, reports, studies and other written materials.
- Make presentations and present proposals and recommendations clearly, logically and persuasively to diverse audiences.
- Use tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive and complex issues, situations and concerned people.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Operate a computer and use standard business software.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:
- In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
- Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
- California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
- DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. Salary Range: Classified Supervisor S1
Starting Salary Range: $6,676 - 7,361 per month (Step 1 to 3). Normal entering step is Step 1.

CLASSIFICATION CATEGORY & RETIREMENT PLAN
The Custodial Services Supervisor is a non-represented, Classified Supervisory position, in compliance with all applicable sections of the California Education Code and related statutes. Supervisory employees are also members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), to which the member contributes up to 8% of their reportable compensation on a monthly basis.
SELECTION PROCESS
