Accountant III, Veteran's Services

Grade 18, AFSCME Unit position, 37.5 hours/week

Campus Location: Lynn Campus

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

SALARY: $2,375.38 biweekly, ($61,759.88 per year) with fringe benefits. An appointment made from outside the bargaining unit (AFSCME) must start at this salary, step #1 of the range or as adjusted in accordance with the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Maintain files, prepare correspondence, answer inquiries, answer phones, prepare reports, data entry and reconcile data, communicating with students, parents and third party vendors about the College's tuition payment policies and practices, assisting them with their financial aid/student accounts inquiries. This position splits their time equally between Student Financial Services office and Veterans Services

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Provides the initial contact with student veterans in matters relating to VA educational benefits, financial aid, and enrollment.
  2. Certifies students' semester enrollment with the VA using the VAOnce system.
  3. Complete initial and annual VA School Certifying Official training.
  4. Maintain an office presence in the absence of the Veteran Services Coordinator: greet students, schedule appointments, answer the phone, handle mail, and respond to email inquiries.
  5. Assist and support personnel and other offices with meeting preparation, staff workshops, and veteran's events (room scheduling, event promotion, note taking, evaluation).
  6. Assist with the surveying of students, collection of data, and compilation of reports related to student veterans and services at North Shore Community College.
  7. Maintain contact lists of Veterans Administration Healthcare contacts, community-based organizations, veteran service officers, and other groups and individuals serving veterans on the North Shore.
  8. Serve as the Student Financial Services (SFS) primary contact for VA billing and payment issues, reconciling any discrepancies.
  9. Utilize collections experience to resolve past due accounts, reinforce the NSCC past due balance policy, and be able to make professional judgment for settlement, when necessary.
  10. Responsible for making sure the payment posting procedure is done with accuracy and consistency from posting to the end of the day closing.
  11. Provide students with accurate and appropriate information about the College's billing and financial aid process.
  12. Work closely with the Veterans Services and SFS management team to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.
  13. Update Student Accounts related informational sheets and forms.
  14. Process third-party tuition remissions.
  15. Process tuition vouchers and agency waivers.
  16. Create itemized bills.

Job Requirements:
  • Three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in accounting or auditing, of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity. Associate's degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience; Bachelor's degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience; Graduate degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for the required experience
  • Demonstrated experience with data entry, the Internet, Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience working with veterans and familiarity with veterans' issues preferred.
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects and work independently.
  • Strong attention to detail and familiarity with Banner or other integrated database system
  • Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations
  • Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to occasionally travel between campuses as necessary.
