Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President, Finance Services, Bucknell University is seeking a Senior Accountant, Compliance & Tax. This role will focus on assisting the university with federal, state and local tax registration, compliance; reporting and return preparation; and developing and implementing accounting controls within the Finance Department. The incumbent in this position will assist in the direct oversight of the financial compliance and reporting of the University, including but not limited to: tax, payroll, disbursements, Department of Education and Information Technology (IT). This position requires a fundamental knowledge of tax law and accounting principles in order to accurately report and document the University's tax and financial information to various tax jurisdictions and regulatory agencies. This position requires strong leadership skills, high integrity, and the ability to represent the organization on many levels and on multiple project teams.

What You Will Do:
  • Works closely with the Director of Payroll and various members of the Talent, Culture & Human Resources team to oversee state and local employment tax registration, compliance and reporting activities of the University
  • Assists in the gathering of information, organization, preparing and reviewing various tax returns including but not limited to:
    • Preparation and coordination of workpapers for completing the University's Form 990.
    • Preparation and filing of annual State Unrelated Business Income Tax Returns and Corporate/Franchise tax returns with the external preparers. Assists in preparing the University's Form 990-T's Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) workpapers (including Investment K-1s), which includes working with various campus departments ensuring activity is properly recorded and determining where the financial responsibility resides.
    • Reconcile, file and pay sales and use tax.
    • Monitoring foreign payees as they relate to non-resident aliens as vendors, employees, and grant and scholarship recipients. Preparation and submission of quarterly-monthly payments and assist in annual preparation and filing of Form 1042/1042s returns.
    • Review Form 1099 MISC preparations and filings at both the federal and state levels
    • Review compliance and preparation of Form 1098-Ts within the student billing ERP system.

  • Prepares and files the annual Charitable Registrations to Solicit Charitable Contributions and annual Charitable Gift Annuity registrations.
  • Prepares various internal and external reporting requirements including but not limited to EADA/NCAA Agreed Upon Procedures, 403(b) financial statements and related forms, etc.
  • Updates, monitors, and documents accounting procedures and controls. Prepares periodic reconciliations with appropriate subsidiary records. Prepares journal entries.
  • Provides assistance to campus constituents with their foreign national tax withholdings and sales and use tax questions.
  • Works closely with internal and external auditors. Assists with preparation of workpapers and related documentation to expedite the audit process.
  • Assists with coordination of various IT initiatives affecting the finance and accounting systems within the Financial Services Area.
  • Assist with the annual updating and monitoring of the Record Retention Policy.

What You Will Bring:

Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field with at least 4 years' relevant experience in financial reporting and/or in higher education/not-for profit industry.
  • Thorough understanding and working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and financial analytical tools and techniques commonly used in higher education.
  • Demonstrated understanding/ability to research various compliance/tax issues and document and/or present your findings and recommendations.
  • A demonstrated results driven focus with proven problem-solving skills, an ability to troubleshoot situations and manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of constituents in both written and oral forms.
  • Appreciation for and understanding of a mission oriented University including a focus on exemplary service and the ability to work within a collaborative team environment with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with large complex ERP systems.
  • Proficiency with desktop computer software applications such as ad hoc report writers, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.


Preferred, But Not Required:
  • CPA, MBA or other advanced degree
  • ADP SmartCompliance and/or Sprintax Calculus experience
  • Workday Finance experience

Salary Range:
72,640.00-90,800.00

The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.

This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.
