Anticipated Start Date: August 2025This is an IN PERSON Part-Time position.

This position performs its duties on the Indian Valley (Novato) campus and occasional travel to the Kentfield Campus may be required, so if not already residing within the Bay Area, the successful candidate must be willing to relocate.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs a variety of learning resources activities and technical, clerical and metal trades work supporting the operations of the Machine Metals program; assists students during classes in carrying out assignments; demonstrates safety procedures and proper use of metal lab equipment; assesses student goals, expectations, status and progress to provide feedback to the instructor; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
An Instructional Assistant - Machine & Metals Technology is distinguished from other Instructional Assistants by the unique nature of the subject matter/coursework in manufacturing machinery and technology, using and operating both conventional and computer numerical control (CNC) equipment, and the location where the work occurs.
Essential Functions
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
- Prepares and sets up lab exercises, demonstrations, instructional materials, and supplies; assists students and faculty in using and operating conventional and computer numerical control (CNC). equipment, machinery, and tools related to the College's manufacturing technology program.
- Assists individual students with assignments, safety procedures and proper use of equipment, problem- solving techniques to locate appropriate materials and correct tools for completing assigned projects and assists students during lab hours for the purpose of improving their skills and course material knowledge.
- Demonstrates skills required to perform lab activities for the purpose of supporting the needs of individual students, including operating various equipment, such as surface grinders, conventional mills and lathes, CNC mills and lathes, and precision inspection equipment and reading engineering drawings and utilizing measuring instruments and machines/devices.
- Creates and maintains basic lab documents such as quality control logs, Material Safety Data Sheets, equipment instruction sheets for the purpose of supporting the lab environment.
- Prepares and maintains laboratory for classes; oversees student cleanup and ensures all equipment and tools are secured.
- Reviews equipment manufacturer's manuals for the purpose of checking warranties and ensuring proper maintenance and operation. Assures proper storage of equipment, hazardous waste, and materials records, such as material safety data sheets
- Maintains and repairs machines and equipment; performs scheduled maintenance and orders supplies, parts and new equipment when needed. Monitors, orders, receives, stores, maintains adequate equipment and materials inventory levels, and assists with program budget and expenditures.
- Assists instructor during laboratory classes; assesses students' learning progress and provides feedback to the instructor.

Requirements & Desirables
REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience:
- Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be graduation from high school or equivalent and three years of increasingly responsible job-related experience in a metal fabrication environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- A demonstrated commitment to equity-minded practices in support of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, college staff, and community members.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff.
- An Associate's and/or Vocational School Degree with study in a job-related area and job-related experience; OR
- Any combination equivalent to two years' college-level coursework in specialized field; OR
- Any combination of education and training equivalent to two years' college-level coursework from an accredited institution in a related field and two years' responsible experience working in a laboratory setting. Additional years of job-related experience may be considered experience in lieu of the education required on a year-for-year basis.
- Some assignments may require a valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program may be required in some assignments.
Knowledge of:
- Metal fabrication processes and techniques.
- Operation, maintenance and repair of all machine shop tools and equipment.
- Safety policies and safe work practices applicable to the work being performed.
- Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Troubleshoot and determine appropriate action in the maintenance and repair of equipment, tools, and machinery in a machine tool lab
- Set up and operate computer and computer-aided machine tools.
- Read, interpret, and apply technical information from manuals, specifications, blueprints, and schematics.
- Explain principles, theories, terminology, techniques, equipment, tools, and materials related to machining and CNC technology programs.
- Safely and effectively use and operate conventional and CNC equipment and tools needed for the work.
- Understand and be sensitive and respectful to the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, cultural, disability, religious background and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty, and staff.
- Analyze situations accurately, exercise sound judgment and adopt effective courses of action.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Prepare clear, concise and comprehensive spreadsheets, correspondence, reports and other written materials.
- Understand, interpret, explain and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures, laws, codes and ordinances.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Operate a computer and use standard business software.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Supplemental & Salary Information
Conditions of Employment:
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:
- In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
- Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
- California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
- DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. Employees work under conditions that are typical for metal fabrication shop. The work is primarily indoors and occasionally in confined spaces and in proximity to others, such as when sharing the same space with a student on a task. The employee may be frequently exposed to hazardous conditions and equipment that may result in minor injuries, and to fumes and airborne particles. The work may require working near moving mechanical parts or equipment. The employee may also be exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting and uncomfortable. The employee is frequently required to wear eye, respiratory and hearing protection, as well as protective footwear.
The employee may occasionally be required to travel to locations other than assigned work site.

Starting Salary Range: $27.83 - $30.69 per hour (Step 1 - 3). Normal entering step is Step 1.

CLASSIFICATION CATEGORY
Employees in classifications represented by the California School Employees' Association (CSEA) Chapter 196 and are required to comply fully with the CSEA/Marin Community College District (MCCD) Collective Bargaining Agreement. General information regarding rights and responsibilities under the Agreement can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreements section of our Human Resources site. CSEA employees are also members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), to which the member contributes up to 8% of their reportable compensation on a monthly basis.

- Employee-only: $1,600/month
- Employee plus one dependent: $2,300/month

Vacation Leave - 90 hours of accrual annually, with additional accrual after 3, 10, and 14 years of service.

Retirement through CalPERS - MCCD contributes 27.05% of employee's creditable earnings to CalPERS on a monthly basis (2024/2025). Vested after five (5) years. Mandatory employee contribution for 2024/2025 is 7% - 8%, depending on original date of membership and prior membership status.
Life Insurance - $50,000, with the option to purchase additional voluntary life insurance for the Lesser of 5x base annual salary or $500,000
Additional Retirement Savings Plans - Employees are also eligible to participate in a voluntary, tax-advantaged 403(b) or 457(b) retirement savings plan.
