Job Summary

The Housing Facilities Services (HFS) group at CU Boulder is currently accepting applications for a Building Mechanic Trainee! This is an entry-level position with a dedicated track to growth within the department and includes on-the-job training. The person hired for this position will train as an apprentice learning the multi-faceted building maintenance and repair trade for HFS. This position will learn the basic maintenance and repair of building systems to include mechanical, electrical, plumbing, transportation, envelope, structure, and finishes. As part of the training this position will provide on-call support as an essential services employee to all areas of HFS during working hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays. This is an "intern-to-target" position; after completing the training period this position will be eligible for promotion to a vacant Building Mechanic position. Housing Facilities Services (HFS) is a comprehensive facility management operation that provides around-the-clock support to over 10,000 residents and 20,000 conference guests annually. Services include maintenance, repair, renovation, project management, capital construction, housekeeping and grounds-keeping operations. HFS has approximately 190 full-time employees and approximately 80 part-time and student staff, who all strive to give residents the best living experience possible.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Mechanical (Plumbing/HVAC):
  • This position will be trained to perform repairs or replace garbage disposals, drain wastes and p-traps; unplug tubs, toilets, sinks, garbage disposals, floor drains and main lines, using both hand and power auger.
  • Repair or replace faucets, shower valves, shower heads, water stops, ball valves, gate valves. Repairs or replaces toilet tanks ballcocks, replaces wax ring and handle kits, supply tubes and flappers.
  • Also assists journeymen plumber. Analyze and determine malfunction of heating and air conditioning system, making required repairs, replaces of control valves, switches, blower motors, and thermostats.
  • (HVAC) Analyze and Pneumatic controls problems repairs or replace and recalibrate as needed.
  • Perform Preventive maintenance inspections and checks in resident's halls and dining halls.
General Building Maintenance Repairs:
  • This position will be trained to perform maintenance in living quarters, campus dining services and public areas to enhance residents security, comfort and convenience by repairing, replacing or assembling furniture, repairing or installing drapery rods, window cranks and latches, towel bars, mirrors, closet hardware and carpet and tile areas.
  • Ensure that buildings are secure by removing and re-glazing window and door glass, replacing or adjusting window balancers and stops, repairing or replacing window and door screens; repairing or installing storm doors.
  • Provide for proper function of kitchens by minor (replace door seal, repair broken cartwheel, lubricate, replace broken knob or handle, etc.) repairs of industrial type kitchen equipment, sic as walk-in and reach-in coolers, warming ovens, dishwashers, salad bars, serving lines, food carts, slices, openers and individual resident appliance such as refrigerators, stoves, microwaves and smaller devices.
Structural Trades (Painting/Carpentry):
  • This position will be trained to perform Structural Trades repair to University of Colorado residence halls, Administration buildings and Campus Dinning Service. Painting repairs such as repairs to damaged drywall or plaster and prepare surface for paint.
  • Use hand tools like (brushes, rollers, spackle, knives, sandpaper) and power tools to apply primer, paint and stains to cover repaired holes, cracks or graffiti and proper furniture and floor worksite protection.
  • Carpentry and general maintenance tasks include such tasks as, maintaining general shop profession and safe use of all power, hand, and pneumatic tools.
  • Repair of ceilings by installing drywall, drop ceiling, grid work and acoustic tile.
  • Construction of and repair of walls/ceiling by installing metal lath, drywall, paneling, crown moldings.
  • Milling doors and jams for proper door hardware installation.
  • Ensuring that all exterior and interior doors function properly by repairing or adjusting door closers, panic bar hardware, locking devices, latches, hinges, doorstops and knob sets.
Electrical Trades:
  • This position will be trained to perform repairs on electric appliances (stoves, refrigerators, and motors); change light bulbs as needed.
  • Replaces domestic hot water circulating pumps and motors, heating and cooling circulating water pumps and motors.
  • Work with asset manager to track all work and maintain inspection record.
Asbestos (ACM O&M):
  • This position is required to maintain certification as a "16-hour asbestos abatement certified employee".
  • Within this function the position will remove asbestos contamination by collecting samples for analysis by others.
Other Responsibilities:
  • This position will be responsible for completing all paperwork related to the training program on time per supervisor, along with any other duties as assigned.

  • The starting annual salary for this position will be $38,500.
  • Beginning January 1st, the anticipated starting annual salary will be $39,060.
