Job Summary:
Bucknell University is seeking a part time Animal Caretaker. The Animal Caretaker is responsible for the monitoring and care of animals and supports the Biology, Psychology, Animal Behavior, and Neuroscience Programs. Animal care at Bucknell is a necessary and critical component that allows Bucknell to be in full compliance with federal regulations regarding animal housing and care. This position reports to the animal caretaker manager, and may work up to 20 hours per week, as needed.
Job Duties:
Primary Responsibilities
- Routine cleaning of cages and living spaces.
- Animal handling, feeding, and food preparation
- Monitoring of food and liquid intake
- Provision of adequate environmental enrichment
- Early detection of signs of illness, injury, pregnancy, or abnormalities in physiology or behavior
- Keeping records of day-to-day animal care (e.g. feedling, cleaning, health checks, etc.)
- Other duties as assigned
These listed responsibilities and tasks are not exhaustive; additional non-essential tasks and responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to work weekends and holidays
- Good communication skills
- Comfortable using email, Microsoft Word and Excel
- Some immunizations are required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience and training in animal care and husbandry
- AALAS certification at any level is preferred
- Knowledge of animal care within the context of biomedical research or veterinary care
Workplace Environment:
- Exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products
- Requires indoor and outdoor work, including exposure to inclement weather
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to occasionally lift 50 pounds

The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.
