Job Description
This position primarily supports the new undergraduate project-based computer science (CS) program. After completing two years of core studies either at Minnesota State University, Mankato or another institution, students compete for a position in our upper-division CS program. During each of the four semesters in the upper-division program, students "learn computer science by doing computer science." The real-world, full-scale projects that supply the main curriculum for the program are provided by industry partners and academic researchers from around the world. The curriculum combines technical training with the professional skills development necessary to succeed in a computing career. Responsibilities in this position include but are not limited to coaching and supporting students' upper-division CS project work; teaching core and elective upper-division CS topics courses using active learning pedagogies; teaching lower-division core computing courses; advising undergraduate students; pursuing funded research/scholarly activities, including seeking funding individually or collaboratively; supporting student growth and educational experiences; continuing professional preparation; participating in service work for the program, department, University, and broader community.
Candidates must demonstrate motivation and experience in support of developing and successfully applying project- and work-based pedagogy in a higher education context.
The successful candidate will engage with industry and academic partners to bring in and execute the CS projects that drive the upper-division program; participate in additional curriculum design, instruction, and evaluation; conduct research productively and mentor students in research; help create innovative strategies for student recruitment, retention, and program completion; and help develop external grant funding from industry and/or government sources.
- A typical faculty workload includes up to twenty-four (24) credits of instruction per academic year.
- The successful candidate may need to teach in other areas as assigned and qualified.
- Faculty may be expected to develop and deliver face-to-face, hybrid, and on-line instruction at the Mankato campus, online, and/or at the university's additional locations, as assigned.
- The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues in curriculum design, instruction and evaluation, conduct research productively and mentor students in research, help create innovative strategies for student recruitment, retention, and completion, and develop external funding.
- All faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly or creative activity or research, in continuing preparation and study, in contributing to student growth and development, and in providing service to the university and community (See Article 22 and Appendix G of the IFO Master Agreement).
- This position will advise undergraduate majors.
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in computer science or closely related field conferred on an official transcript at the date of appointment.
- Ability to serve a diverse population and apply an equity lens to this position including social justice and/or anti-racism.
Preferred Qualification
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
- Experience teaching and fostering learning success among diverse student populations including first-generation students, second-language learners, international students, and other student populations that are under-represented in the STEM fields.
- Understanding of, ability to support, and/or experience with using project-based learning pedagogical methods across the breadth of computer science, including teaching, advising, and/or mentoring students in such programs.
- Demonstrated understanding of and ability to support development of industry and academic partner relationships, particularly in garnering and supporting the execution of projects that serve as the curricular basis of the upper division CS program.
- Ability to teach upper-division undergraduate topics across the breadth of computer science, but especially courses in the Theory of Computing, Data Structures, Computer Architecture, Data Analytics, Natural Language Processing, Database, Computer Vision , Cloud Computing and Networking, along with additional courses depending on the department's needs.
- Effective written, oral communication, and presentation skills, particularly in working with students, staff, and faculty.
- Experience in industry, military, post-doctoral research, and/or formal and informal educational settings.
- Demonstrated success or strong potential for productivity in research, grant writing, creative activity and scholarship.
