Job Summary:
Eastern Washington University and its Office of Institutional Research (IR) seeks applications for the position of Data Consultant 1 - Project.

This is a full-time project position for the duration of the ADVANCE Grant.

Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Institutional Research, the Data Consultant 1 will perform entry-level activities to assist higher-level data consultants, report creators, and/or Directors with following:

  • Assisting with the development, design, implementation, maintenance and modification of complex research projects involving data collection, algorithms, data manipulation, analytical modeling, data warehousing, and computer applications and reporting systems
  • Assisting with data mining, statistical reasoning, and statistical procedures
  • Developing dashboards and reports by extracting data from information system

The salary for this position is $45,636 (minimum) up to $52,620. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience, and skills. Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree, or to be completed within 12 months, in statistics, data science, data analytics, computer science, economics, or mathematics with coursework in mathematical statistics (theory) and general linear models
  • Experience analyzing descriptive and inferential statistics using the R programming language (Python, SAS or STATA will also be considered)
  • Experience gathering data using SQL programming
  • Excellent reproducible research habits (Git, clean coding practices, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new statistical/machine learning methods
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently or collaboratively when needed
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with critical and time-sensitive processes
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of verbal or written documents and sensitive data
  • Foster a culture of ethical research, a commitment to diversity, and encourage a supportive, team-oriented work environment
  • Demonstrated interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who possess the following:
  • Knowledge and implementation of machine/statistical learning methodology (predictive modeling workflow)
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical methods such as longitudinal data analysis and time-series
  • Experience presenting research and/or statistical findings and methods to technical and non-technical constituents
  • Experience creating Tableau dashboards or R Shiny applications
  • Experience working with higher education data (Banner systems)
  • Experience working in the Argos reporting system

Job Duties:
Research and Data Analysis
  • Collaborate with other IR staff to develop, design, implement, maintain, and modify analytical tools that improve student retention, student success, and EWU academic business practices
  • Perform technical tasks for research projects and assist with methods of development, design, analysis, and coordination of research projects and studies
  • Assist with the compilation of data and writing of analyses and summaries to clearly and succinctly render historical and current trends and that are pertinent to the university
  • Compose accompanying narrative reports in an easily understandable manner
  • Assist in developing and revising forms and other instruments to collect or display data
  • Complete similar additional duties assigned by the Director

Dashboards, Data Visualization, and Reporting
  • Participate in the development, design, implementation, maintenance, and improvements of institutional dashboards and reports
  • Download data from institutional data sources and utilize application software to create reports for faculty, administrators, and outside agencies
  • Assist with extracting, analyzing, and reporting data from the universitys business intelligence systems, or from external data sources at the state or national levels, in response to recurring and ad hoc requests
  • Collaborate with other IR staff on local and national studies used in the management of the university
  • Complete similar additional duties assigned by the Director

ADVANCE Grant Support
The Data Consultant 1 (to be hired) will spend 20 hours of assigned time per week; this dedicated staff time will focus on data integrations and tools that will aid in the success of the ADVANCE grant.

  • Assist in redesigning the faculty climate survey and ensure proper data collection for internally valid data.
  • Design the Prospective Faculty Survey and its data collection system.
  • Build forward-facing dashboards that allow stakeholders to view relevant metrics related to the proposed outcomes of the grant and contribute to the formation of faculty training materials.

Conditions of Employment:
This is a full-time 36-month administrative project position reporting to the Associate Director for Institutional Research.
Note: This is dependent on the actual lifespan of the ADVANCE Grant.

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or childrenunder the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

All new employees must comply with EWU Immunization Policy 602-02 and provide proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR before beginning work at EWU. Waivers for the immunization requirements are available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs.
