Dean of the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts
University of Illinois at Chicago
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) seeks an exceptional leader to serve as Dean of the newly restructured College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts.
UIC (www.uic.edu) is among the nation's preeminent urban public research universities, a Carnegie RU/VH research institution, and the largest university in Chicago. UIC serves approximately 28,000 students, comprising one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation. Through its 15 colleges, UIC produces nationally and internationally recognized multidisciplinary academic programs in concert with civic, corporate and community partners worldwide, including a full complement of health sciences. By emphasizing cutting-edge and transformational research along with a commitment to the success of all students, UIC embodies the dynamic, vibrant and engaged 21st-century urban university.
The UIC College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts houses a celebrated, diverse and interdisciplinary community of architects, designers, visual and performing artists, historians and museum professionals. Through the College's rigorous academic programs students pursue intellectual and artistic experimentation, critical thinking, problem solving, and the expression of imagination. Engaged artists, scholars, critics, collaborators and cultural innovators provide students with an unparalleled education enriched by direct access to Chicago's wealth of cultural institutions. In August of 2013 a two-year initiative to reorganize the College will culminate in the newly renamed College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts with four academic schools (Architecture, Design, Art & Art History and Theatre & Music), the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, Gallery 400, and the UIC Innovation Center (in partnership with the Colleges of Engineering and Business Administration). The new structure strengthens the College and Schools, facilitates interdisciplinary partnerships, and foregrounds the College's unique identity, positioning it for continued success in the 21st-century.
Candidates for Dean of the College of Architecture Design, and the Arts must have the following qualifications: an outstanding record of creative, scholarly, professional, and/or educational achievement, meriting appointment as a tenured full professor in one of the Schools of the College; a history of successful leadership in an administrative role; a demonstrated commitment to diversity, student learning, and shared faculty governance; and experience with and a commitment to fundraising. Equally important is the ability to deploy resources strategically and manage a complex organization while articulating a shared vision for the future of the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts within a public urban research university.
