Director, Recreation Operations

Job Summary
The Director, Recreation Operations provides operational leadership of administrative, facility, and business operations within University Recreation & Wellness. Develops strategic collaborations that support the goals and objectives of the department.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Provides oversight and direction on the operations and administrative direction of University Recreation facilities including the Lee County/FGCU Aquatics Center, Recreation Fields, Recreation Outdoor Complex, SoVi Pool, the University Recreation & Wellness Center, and the Waterfront.
  • Directs the department capital improvements, major maintenance and facility project plans, and custodial schedules. Serves as the liaison with Physical Plant.
  • Plans and implements special projects as assigned. Conducts research and prepares analyses, reports and presentations.
  • Serves as a liaison between administration and employees by handling questions, interpreting and administering policies and procedures, and resolving escalated issues and concerns.
  • Develops and implements operational policies and guidelines for the division. Ensures that all administrative operations and activities comply with university policies and guidelines
  • Provides administrative oversight of the department's risk management, safety, and continuity of operation plans. Ensures all safety practices are followed.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of the division strategic plan. Develops goals and outcomes that align with the strategic plan.
  • Serves as department administrator for technology and software systems.
  • Develops and manages operating budgets to ensure program alignment with fiscal allocation. This includes oversight of all annual, continuing, and one-time agreements and contracts.
  • Directs the work of department staff, sets performance standards and accountability. Develops growth and development plans to maximize employee performance and address departmental skill gaps.
  • Participates on a variety of committees and projects as a representative of the divisional Vice President.
  • Serves as a liaison and representative of the Vice President with key internal and external constituents.


Other Duties:
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Serves as convener of the Lee County/FGCU Aquatics Center Advisory Board and a member of the Miromar Lake Use Advisory Committee.


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Recreation Management, Sports Administration, or closely related field.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications or able to obtain within three months of employment.
  • Valid driver's license or eligibility to obtain by date of hire.
  • Six years of full-time professional experience related to the position.
  • Experience scheduling and supervising the work of students, support, and professional employees.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook).


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Pool Operator/Aquatic Facility Operator certification.
  • Ten years of full-time professional experience in higher education campus recreation related to the position.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of recreation, aquatics programming, facility management, and event coordination.
  • Knowledge of student intellectual, emotional and social development theory, techniques and research.
  • Knowledge of safety guidelines for recreation programming and risk management planning.
  • Knowledge of recreation technology and software programs.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to establish collaborative and strategic relationships with a diverse group of colleagues, students, and partners.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of independent judgment in the establishment, interpretation, application, and enforcement of all rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Ability to effectively manage the work of others by providing information, guidance, and motivation.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively, have a high standard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate best practices into the organizational structure.


Salary Range: $62,500 to negotiable
